Infected
the The
Yet another album that takes me back to University and discovered courtesy of one of my new friends/housemates. Thrown together by chance and a landlord renting rooms out. New people from all parts of the country, Vince a Southampton fan, Jacqui a rag, Alastair a Shrewsbury fan and Abid who admitted to once owning a QPR sports bag.
All brought their own musical tastes that were added to through all the music press being brought into the house every week. It being Abid, one of my new chums and already a huge Matt Johnson fan that brought this choice to the fore.
So it was that both Soul Mining & Infected came to be on regular rotation in the house broadening my musical knowledge and tastes. It was however the content of Infected that made me opt for this album. Is it of it's time? Or is it perhaps relevant now with all that is going on in the UK and the world?
It was also a case of this choice winning out as it contains “Heartland” which along with “Between The Wars” is one of my favourite singles. Not sure if this shows me as being stuck in the past and a little gloomy, or perhaps maybe more hopeful for the future?
I think of the The being very British and on this album Mr J seems to be telling the world what is going on here. Certainly something a little gritty but also with the odd pop twinge and the ability to make a toe tap. Plenty of synths, horns and the odd bit of guitar (but not much). A reasonable voice aided on one track by Neneh Cherry and I think Mr J put together a pretty fine album.
I cannot match some of the stories and connections that others have with the albums that they have put forward. For me, it is just a case of simpler, happier (a bit odd considering the general tone of this choice) and carefree times. Where what was going on in the world didn’t bother me half as much as it does now.
Oh yes, and King Kenny in the video for Heartland!
