2026 Grand National (11 April)

Even better reason to put more money on then, saves going to someone else in the end :)
Bookies are the only winners that's why they love the national as they make a fortune but not from me :) but I will go the extra mile this year and have 50p e/w :) :)

They are indeed illegal Mad Eyed Screamer, but infinitely more cruel than ever horse racing could ever be.

Bullfighting.....see earlier comments.

If people really do have a concern for animal cruelty, then searching it out and dealing with it or notifying the police should be on their agenda.

Of course you're entitled to your opinion, but there is far more serious animal cruelty happening around the country than horse racing, so stop those first.

If you are concerned about deplorable acts of cruelty, then the Grand National is not where you should be focusing your efforts. I see Polanski is also jumping on the bandwagon for a little political showboating as well.

I suspect that you know very little about horse racing and horse welfare apart from what you read on your social media feed.

While your concern regarding animal cruelty is admirable, you should really be focusing on serious animal cruelty like dog fighting, cockfighting, badger baiting and puppy mills (and bullfighting).
Make an effort to seek them out and go and stop them..........but of course that would require a little backbone, so I guess the easier option is something like the Grand National. With the National you can complain about it, while at the same time ignoring actual serious and unregulated animal cruelty.

Although I love horses and horse racing, there are many other races apart from the Grand National that I'm more interested in. I have no objection to the many changes that have been made to the race, but in terms of a test for a horse, it's a shadow of the race it once was. Whether that's good or bad for the race is another question.

Well fancy that!

Can't see past Maximus again tbh, I do have Panic Attack at a bigger price but she's gone very short now. Did have Nick Rockett aswell but he's not made the race!

Lecky Watson could run a big race at huge odds if he reverts to the front running tactics he used when winning the Brown's advisory last year.

Correct me if I am wrong, but dog fighting, cockfighting and badger baiting are all illegal in the UK and those organising such events are dealt with by the law. Bull fighting? Where does that take place in the UK?
Those opposing the National are correct in (in my humble opinion and Morrissey's too), in seeking this race to be added to the list of banned "sporting" events in the UK.
It’s a long distance handicap with not much jeopardy to it, the fences are smaller these days, the horses are kept like royalty, fed the best, housed in stables that are warm in winter, exercised regularly and loved by their stable staff.

Now I like the Smith’s music but like one of the above posters Morrisey knows fuck all about horse racing, by commenting on it he’s just ignorant to the facts.

Horses die, (so do jockeys occasionally), it’s a fact of all of them involved in any kind of sphere in the horse world, sometimes it’s a heart attack, sometimes it’s a broken leg. Without racing where do you think they’d end up? I’ll tell you, in the slaughter house, maybe France where they’re a food product. Owners are certainly not going to keep them at enormous expense to just live in a stable.

Horse racing is a major employer, from Trainers, stable staff, horse box drivers, farriers, vets to catering staff and other employees at racecourses and many more, ridiculous that people think racing should be banned or even just the National, a horse could meet its maker in a handicap chase on Tuesday at Sedgefield so if you want to ban the National do you want to ban all Racing?

You did well on getting Panic attack at 25s. It's around 7 to 8-1 now. However, it's a mare and only once in all the runnings of the national as a female horse won it. On that stat alone the odds are against it. Cracking horse though. I'm not saying what I fancy, because soon as I open my mouth they turn to rat shit.

Without racing where do you think they’d end up? I’ll tell you, in the slaughter house, maybe France where they’re a food product. Owners are certainly not going to keep them at enormous expense to just live in a stable.

Thoroughbreds aren't wild horses either, they are very highly tuned, and very susceptible to infections. They need round the clock care and attention as well as lots of exercise. If you chucked 20 racehorses in a farmers field and left them to their own devices I'd bet at least 10 wouldn't last the week.

I think it’s pretty clear it’s the fences that need banning, certainly reducing more.

Really?

Horses can die flat racing, out in the paddock, retired in a field, or just from any other accident or illness. Their bone structure and physical frame don't usually allow for a repair like a human, so unfortunately a decision has to be made from time to time.

No racing......no thoroughbred horses.

An awful lot has been done over the years to improve horse welfare, but for me, there are other areas that need looking at, not the actual racing on the racecourse.

Apparently 2000 Guineas fancy Gewan sustained a fatal injury on the gallops this morning.

Not a fence in sight and never would have jumped one.
If it wasn't for racing, then Gewan wouldn't even have had chance to enjoy any life at all.

You wouldn't find many better places to have a horse trained than at Andrew Baldings, the horses would have the absolute best care available.

Shit happens.
