45 | Abdukodir Khusanov - 2025/26

Having watched him play Lens in Ligue 1 quite a few times, he consistently displayed good footwork and distribution. It's only here in the forum that some people have invented a flaw in him, claiming he's poor at distributing the ball and his passing is bad—a choice I've always disputed.

Here's a brief summary of his performance last season (February 2025) against Tottenham, a few days after signing here,

enjoy his long passes

against Wolverhampton this season

He's had moments with passing in the past and I still think he has a ways to go but Chelsea was his most consistent passing performance and I would still say a significant improvement. He looked a lot more comfortable than he has done in the past.

Yet, I posted a video from last February. If you had seen it, you would have noticed they were making the same long passes as yesterday against Chelsea.

Apart from his Chelsea match, he has always been satisfactory, and many of us, coming here, didn't understand why he wasn't playing anymore. Some even told us he had a clause in his contract: if he plays a certain number of games, City has to pay more…

Again, I'm not discovering Khusanov; I regularly follow Ligue 1, my home league, and I saw him at Lens, just as good with his passing. Even here last season, in that respect, I see the same player he was in the red and gold shirt.

Imagine him being your dad and getting sent home from school on report.
What a sheltered life (:

Imagine being sent home from school for forging dinner tickets after realising the paper was the same as the paper towels in the bogs; point stands though, he is physically as imposing as prime desailly; recovery pace of walker and now technically showing an immense short and long range passing ability; his biggest quality is mentality, the start never phased him, head down and remained humble

He, like the really imposing centre backs, win the duel before stepping foot on the pitch, his reputation is growing and most don’t want a head on collision with a freight train

Love him for bringing back an old fashioned approach that shows it can be adapted to the modern game; best point, it’s invariably clean as a whistle, which for such a high energy approach, only makes it more exceptional!

I saw and again it's the consistency he's improved, I've seen glimpses of the 30-40 yards raking passes from him, I know he can do that, that's less important for me. For me the one to improve on was always get the ball out of his feet and switch it to Nunes faster or to Guehi faster or into Rodri or Bernardo. I thought Sunday was his best for that. The 30-40 yarders are nice but the makeup of a defenders passing is, get it out your feet, pop it off and as I say in this regard Sunday was markedly better. The last 6 weeks have been markedly better.

Quite normal for a young defender to be a bit nervous making short passes around the back, especially with unfamiliar teammates. We have a gem, and all gems need polishing, but they are still gems. It is clear that he is becoming more comfortable, more composed, and seems to realise that he belongs. As importantly, it is clear that his teammates know that he belongs. I absolutely love witnessing this kind of development.

Love that he's becoming more confident and even screaming and slapping the keeper on the farter after a good save. Great to see the passion from a young lad.

All teams who play like we do need someone in the back line who is just fucking rapid. We had Walker and he covered all kinds of counters single handedly, so I'm a big fan of having Khus in the team for this alone.

I am unsure if he's a little shy ( he doesn't perform like he's shy )
But the way Haaland almost bullies him to interacting with us fans after the match is team building at its best.
I am looking forward to watching him play today more than I should be.
Unsure if my heart could cope when he bags a goal. CTID

I’ve been a massive fan of Khus since he walked in the door, pretty sure I said he was our Walker replacement the day we signed him, but I think the problem here is that “passing” or even worse “on the ball” is like 10 different skills rolled into one.

Khusanov definitely has some areas where he can improve, I think the Real CL games he was quite timid and didn’t want to make difficult passes into midfield when we were struggling to break them down. He’s a bit clunky in tight spaces and I’d like him to carry the ball more when he’s the free man, make players commit to him before passing. There’s also definitely times when he stalls on the ball and slows things down when what we need is the ball moving quickly.

But it’s nothing he can’t improve on, and you’d expect him to the longer he’s in a team like this. He’s already better than Dias at all of this stuff, and if he improves a bit he could genuinely replace Stones.

Gonna have a problem when Gvardiol is back, I don't think Dias should start over Guehi nor Khusanov now, would be great for the squad to have all 4 next season.

Gvardiol left back

O’Reilly takes over Bernie in midfield

Jobs a good 'un.

Gvardiol is a goal theat from LB too, and young Nico probably becomes an even bigger goal threat from midfield.

One iffy moment when he come across a player as last man, dangerous thing to do and didnt need to do it but tht aside a faultless performance. Just a matter of time now before the rest of the world catches up and recognises his level. Will be the best cb in the league before he's 25, probably substantially sooner.

Not just speed and tough tackles as everyone can easily see on the surface, but his real strength is his concentration as well.
