All season long I've been keeping an eye on the Man of the Match threads after every game.

I've looked at who's been voted MOTM the most times, who's won the vote with more than a 50% share, and keeping track of the players who've finished 2nd and 3rd in each vote.

Points awarded:
1st place with more than 50% of the vote share - 4 points
1st place - 3 points
2nd place - 2 points
3rd place - 1 point

(Bonus)
1 extra point for each game a player is voted MOTM (i.e. Donnarumma MOTM 7 times, so gets 7 extra points)

....

Donnarumma - 37 points (7x MOTM)
Trafford - 15 points (2x MOTM)
Marcus Bettinelli - 0 points

Rayan Ait-Nouri - 2 points
Nathan Ake - 1 point
Ruben Dias - 1 point
Marc Guehi - 20 points (3x MOTM)
Josko Gvardiol - 7 points
Abdukodir Khusanov - 33 points (4x MOTM)
Rico Lewis - 2 points
John Stones - 8 points (1x MOTM)
Matheus Nunes - 23 points (2x MOTM)
Nico O'Reilly - 32 points (3x MOTM)
Max Alleyne - 3 points

Rayan Cherki - 49 points (8x MOTM)

Phil Foden - 37 points (6x MOTM)
Mateo Kovacic - 1 point
Nico Gonzalez - 13 points (1x MOTM)

Its also based on some idiots actually voting after the game for the worst player and a waste of a fucking vote. Its done deliberately so I for one will take no notice of the final placings.
However well done to the the OP for taking the time out for the placings.

Nice work.

Jeez, it sounds like a tough season when the goalie's further up the list than yer star striker!
tbf I think the keeper is guaranteed to get a few points with this format as people will vote them as MOTM by default after poor team performances.

Really interesting to see this as I don't think anyone would argue that O'Reilly wasn't at least in the top three this season. Maybe shows his consistency rather than having a few standout performances.

Foden coming 4th is interesting.

Fan bias ?

For me its O'Reilly. To fit in, play 2 or 3 different positions and to excel at his age !.

He had an unbelievable spell over 4 games and then was abysmal, the worst I've seen him play for us over the January period. But it's been a poor season by his incredible standards and very inconsistent.

Here are the league totals for a few English players.

Foden got 7 goals and 5 assists in the league, but 6 goals and 1 assist came in a 4 game spell - that's what we expect to see but over a whole season. He should be getting around 20 goals/assists if he's fit for an entire season. Hopefully we see him back to that level next year.

Gibbs White - 15 goals, 4 assists
Bowen - 9 goals, 13 assists
Watkins - 16 goals, 4 assists
Rogers - 10 goals, 8 assists
Saka - 7 goals, 10 assists

So we're starting to take Haaland for granted then.

I think the whole country does. He set a benchmark and now anything less is regarded as a bad season. He got the 4th most assists in the league with 8 and scored 5 more goals than anyone else (27).

Just to make the point - 27 league goals is one more than Aguero's best season for us (26 in 33 games).

All of that in a season where we missed Marmoush at the AFCON and had to flog Haaland for the majority of the season.

So we're starting to take Haaland for granted then.
I don't know if it's 100% that necessarily, I think it's more the case that he just wasn't in good form between January and March and that bad form subsequently affected his final total.

If he'd continued showing the form he was in between August and December - and then again between April and the end of the season - he'd have pushed Cherki much closer and might have even won the Bluemoon POTY award. That run of 4 goals in 18 games between December 27th and March 16th is ultimately what's cost him.

Between December 27th and March 16th he picked up a total of 2 points from 18 voting threads. From March 17th until the end of the season he scored 9 goals in 12 games and claimed another 6 points from the voting threads, being voted MOTM with more than 50% of the vote after his hat-trick against Liverpool.

Across the first in the first 26 games of the season (when he scored 25 goals) he was picking up 0.77 points per game, in those middle 18 games (when he scored 4 goals) he was picking up 0.12 points per game, in the last 12 games of the season (when he scored 9 goals) he picked up 0.50 points per game.

He would have finished the season with more than 40 points (before any MOTM bonuses) if he'd continued at that rate of securing 0.77 points per game and would have finished the season with nearly 50 points if his average had only dropped to 0.50 points per games instead of all the way down to 0.12 points per game like it did.

rumbled but you've got to smile

So we're starting to take Haaland for granted then.
I wouldn’t say that.

When I think about who my MOTM is for any game, I always think of who influenced the game most from minute-to-minute. There are very often players more effective throughout many games than Haaland, who have many more touches of the ball and always involved in the game, who remain in the memory for number of things executed in the game to influence a MOTM vote.

Sometimes, even when he scores, Haaland can be out of the game for long stretches. He averaged just 21 touches of the ball per game this season. Whereäs, Cherki this season averaged 79 touches in games he started… although, in 2018-19, Gündoğan had three games where he had 181, 193 and 195 touches, and Rodri holds the PL record with 196 in a game… someone could score 5 goals in a game and not get my MOTM vote if someone has influenced a game with 190+ touches.

There was also a run of games where Haaland wasn’t scoring much (3 in 13 PL games, 5 in 17 PL+CL games) and he was largely ineffective off the ball, even against Exeter where we scored 10 he wasn’t in the game. So you can see why others got MOTM votes over him in those months.

More like recency bias against that. He had a good first half of the season, but nobody remembers that.
For me it’s Khunes, Nunes and O’Riley in that order.
Khunes for his brilliance, Nunes for consistency, and NOR as the best young player. It’s a personal choice for everybody.
