Kevin Keegan diagnosed with cancer | Confirmed as stage 4

As a kid that lived outside Manchester in the early 2000s and had to survive on season review VHS tapes, the scraps at the end of MOTD as well as the rare FA Cup game on BBC, i have a real fondness for the Keegan era at City. He also delivered the win in the last ever Maine Road Derby.

Regardless of all that, this is a terrible shame. Thanks for everything.

KK 2002.jpg

This pic was taken Aug 2002 vs Everton at Maine Road. My Dad was friends with Buzzer and just before kick off he saw me and my daughter, and asked if we'd like a quick picture with KK. It was literally 1 minute before KO. Buzzer grabbed him and KK trotted over. Really engaged with my daughter, to the extent that Asa Hartford had to shout over "gaffer the games started". He had every excuse to decline the pic, but didn't, which is a measure of the man.

Scroll forward to last Friday night, some 24 years later. Despite her autism, my daughter is now working for a PR/Memorabilia firm and KK is one of their clients. She had only ever met him once, at 2 years old, in 2002. She would never associate a name to a famous face, so working with some guy called Kevin Keegan probably didn't register with her. But she recognised his face when introduced, immediately pulled up the piccie and proudly showed it Kev, reminding him he got told off for missing kick-off. Sharp as a tack, and bearing in mind the thousands of pics the man has had taken over the years, he laughed and said "yes, and totally the fault of a certain Mr Summerbee, if memory serves".

Absolute giant of a man, who will fight to the end, as he did on the pitch.

What a story...thank you :)

Such sad news. Really made football great again. Found memories of his passion at City. You're a fighter Kevin, so hope you beat this.

Happy to be known in my family as KK as well!

Wish I could like this more than once, top post mate.

For me a man of a bygone era in the best possible way, he wanted to win but he wanted to entertain, a real people's person, loved watching him on superstars as a kid, imagine Erling Haaland whizzing around on a bicycle on some dodgy 400metre track and falling off, thats what kk did, he wanted to win. KK truly lovely man, humble enough to accept he wasn't good enough for England a man of morals not money, i wish him nothing but the very very best
