24 | Joško Gvardiol - 2025/26

We can offer a big contract to Josko, Stones Bernardo leaving free up the wage bill. And possibly Marmoush and Reijnders leaving as well. Guehi wage is fully justified he will be our main CB next season

he’s been here three seasons and he’s never really cemented himself as a guaranteed in his favoured position.

Gvardiol was the main option at LCB for a year or so. He was a firm starter at CB before the injury.

That he’s versatile and can be excellent at LB too (where his quality helped us to win the 4 in a row) doesn't mean he's not great at CB.

Try your argument of Foden: Foden is talented but he hasn't made a position his own...

IF (big if) he wants to leave just because Pep has gone then fuck me, don't want somebody with that mentality lingering around like a bad smell. Same if he wants to leave because he's got competition in his position.

Hope it's just agent drumming up business during a contract negotiation but feels different to that.
Mentality was a huge thing for Pep and the players he recruited so for me it doesn't seem right that a player like Gvardiol suddenly wants out because the manager has left or there is competition for places.

Don’t think you can compare apples with oranges when he’s a player who should have cemented his name at centre half considering the cost and hype.

But fair enough mate, it’s just my opinion.

For me Gvardiol is third in the CB pecking order but of course I could be wrong and he could go on to become one of the worlds best in his position.

Shouldn't have signed Guehi, if I am Gvardiol, I get get injured and my club signs my replacement on higher wages despite my contribution, I am pissed. He is better than Guehi, so it would be a massive shame to lose him and we really shouldn't have signed Guehi if that's the case.

Gvardiol isn’t up for the fight, he has no divine right to start and he only began getting games at centre half regularly mid way into last season. Guehi/ Khus worked much better for us than Gvardiol/ Dias.

I would like to see Gvardiol Khus but it does feel like it lacks experience. Guehi is a leader.

Guehi and Gvardiol should be our main CB next season

I'd tend to agree with this. We could have got away with it, but feels like a squad management risk Txiki might not have made. We could have muddled through 4 months with Ake. Learning experience for Viana.

Disagree. He'd broken his leg and was out for the foreseeable and we were in all four competitions at the time with our centre back options as:

- Ake - out/injury prone
- Stones - out/injury prone
- Dias - out/injury prone
- Khusanov - young and inexperienced (but fantastic)
- Gvardiol - broken leg
- Alleyne - young and too inexperienced for the competitions
- Akanji - out on loan
- Reis - out on loan

So based on that, we had Khusanov plus whoever could scramble together 90 minutes twice a week, which was nobody. Plus, a Khusanov who had been troubled by injury earlier in the season.

I remember Ake played through injury which isn't sustainable nor fair on him in a World Cup year. Or fair in general really.

We needed a CB, we saw Guehi was available for a price which was way below his market value because of his contract situation and we rightly pounced on that opportunity. Wages too high? Maybe, but Guehi had us by the bollocks because of the above.

Going into next season we'll have Dias, Guehi, Khusanov, Gvardiol(?) and maybe Reis/Ake too. Dias can't do a full season and shouldn't be a guaranteed starter, Khusanov is mustard but will need rotation (as will everybody), Guehi the same as Khusanov, Ake likely won't be here and if he is then he'll need his minutes managing and Reis won't be playing week in, week out.

If Gvardiol sees that as too much of a fight to get minutes and play an important role then he's not the right fit for the club.

You can't expect to be a guaranteed starter at a club competing on so many fronts and nor can you expect the club not to act on a market opportunity when you're out injured and it's a position we were struggling for fitness in.

Losing Gvardiol and Rodri, whilst selling Trafford to continue with Donnarumma, will regress our ability in the build up to bottom half PL standards. And it always used to be the thing we were elite at. It’s a big concern going forwards. We were already lacking in that area even WITH those players.

Guehi wasn't signed to replace Gvardiol, he was the long term replacement for Stones.

Your logic flaw mate, the first 2 name is elite but to bring Trafford in the same category is stupid. You say we will regress yet you rather keep Trafford(not elite) than Donnarumma(elite)

The supposed reason for him being unhappy and the reason for him wanting to go are contradictory...

He's unhappy because under Pep he never really got to play permanently in his favoured position.

Yet..

He wants to leave because Pep has gone.

Make it make sense!

That’s a pathetic excuse for him. Why should City ruin their season because he fractured his tibia? Even KDB and Aguero had to deal with competition but Gvardiol shouldn’t? If he can’t back himself against Guehi and Khusanov he can find himself a move.
