I think the sudden change of stance from the US is something to do with Zelenskyy actually having some cards.
I'm seeing more and more reports/language showing the US is gently back behind Ukraine.
It wouldn't surprise me if Trump himself was behind it. Not because he has suddenly stopped being a ****, more because he likes winners and hates losers. If true this is actually bad news for Putin. Maybe US intelligence knows something is coming and Trump wants to exploit it.
My post was aimed at Musk in particular rather than the discernible shift in the US position of late, most noticeably in terms of Rubio’s output. Guess we’ll have to see if Trump vetoes this recent aid and loans package.
Thing about the US is their intelligence in respect of Russia has always been pretty sound, and assuming that hasn’t been overwhelmingly degraded by DOGE cuts etc.. then they will broadly know which way the wind is blowing inside the Kremlin.
Turning back to Musk, and much of this is based on supposition, but as I read it he was incensed by that double tap attack by Russia on that railway station a few months back and received wisdom was that had caused him to redouble efforts to block unauthorised Russian use of Starlink in occupied territories, which has certainly proved a significant turning point in the war that is highly unlikely to be a coincidence. My question is whether that was the limit of his assistance at the time or whether it extended beyond that, as it appears to have marked a point where matters have shifted in Ukraine’s favour more widely - not just on the front line or in the kill zone, but behind those lines and into Russia. Seems to be moving in their direction more generally. Don’t have a clue what the answer is, and it could be that the Starlink move was merely a catalyst, but it’s perfectly plausible, if Musk was as incensed as suggested, that this marked a more significant inflection point. He’s probably the single non-political (of sorts) individual globally who can make a significant difference to this war. Maybe his altered relationship with Trump has changed things.
He was pretty ambivalent about the war at the outset, possibly even slightly pro Russian, but that must have surely changed - the question is, to what extent?
