Elliot Anderson | Opening bid rejected (p189)

I think we would be right not to go over £100 million for Anderson. He can't be the only player in world football that would improve our relatively average midfield. I'd let Marinakis stew on it for a month and see if anybody emerges in the World Cup.

What does that mean? We have obviously identified him as our best and number one option. So if Forest want Rice money £105 mill then you’d downgrade for the sake of £5 mill ?
Thing is there is no bidding war because Anderson seems to have made clear ,like others in the past, he wants us, thats a big thing. We won’t leave him high and dry for the sake of 5- 10 mill.
Using the world cup for scouting alternatives would be a terrible idea.

Not a great tactic for a Club of our magnitude. It's a few matches for most teams, it's not excatly extensive scouting. I prefer watching players over the course of months and years, not weeks.

De Bruyne still won Bundesliga young player of the year and player before he signed for us. Rodri although not quite world class was still better (although not at the World Class levels) during his time in La Liga than what Anderson is coming to City at. Both were signed for less than what we are about to pay for Anderson. Some supporters don't have a heavy bias. If Anderson does start dictating the midfield of our Domestic and European rivals then fair enough he is worth his money.
Agree on de bruyne.
Disagree on Rodri, who had only played 34 matches for athletico when we signed him

It means if he wants us and only us, let the World Cup play out and don't be held to ransom, and be open to alternatives. I get there is a stigma around signing players from International tournaments but there seems to be a bit of a dearth of top level midfielders at the moment. If someone were to stick their head above the parapet and stand out in the World Cup I don't see why we wouldn't be interested.

Doku and Gvardiol made their names at a World Cup and they have been 2 of our better recent signings.

That's just not a thing any more. Modern scouting is so in depth that they'll already know about every player at the World Cup and a decent performance in the tournament will mean nothing.

Maybe we have some players on our radar who we may accelerate plans for if they show they can perform at a high level. Obviously we have Anderson bookmarked, there is too much noise around it, but perhaps there are a few Khusanov/Reis types who may come out of left field.

It will get done it will probably be quite soon, the fee not my problem. Tuchel seems open to deals happening, but probably not after the tournament starts

He isn’t but the worry is that we once again buy cheaper and it doesn’t work again . This lad has massive potential and we have the money . If we are happy to just make champions league then we should just keep buying good players instead of future elite .

Agree mate . First bid is just a water tester but we will know what they want and tbh I’d get gibbs white aswell . Fucking astounded how he never went to World Cup and Henderson did .
