Yayyy Oh Yay Ohhh Sinner Rush Are Back Touring the UK

Warduna sound interesting.

Which post Fish Marillion album would you recommend to a Rush fan?
I think Marbles is their best album post Fish with Brave, Afraid of Sunlight and This Strange Engine the best of the rest. They don't translate from Rush as well as Fish era and, like Blue 2112 I took many years to get into them again once he left. But once I did, I really got into Hogarth and I have seen them so many times live and they are always superb.

I appreciate this is all off topic, but unlike Blue 2112 I’ve still not been able to fully make that transition. And the only regret I have with that can be summarised in one word; Rothery.

Played Script in full the other day and was reminded that the two standout features of the band that I fell in love with were Fish (his concept - and the artwork - his lyrics, his singing/delivery, his stage presence) and Rothery’s playing.
Three of my most enjoyable gigs of the last 10 years have been the Steve Rothery band at Band On The Wall playing tracks from the first 4 albums with such joy. Brought tears to my eyes.

With Hogarth I went to the Seasons End tour and heard that album and was so underwhelmed with both I let them go. His voice had a timbre, a quavering, wavering, reedy quality that in the past often grated with me. I couldn’t get past it to appreciate the lyrical meaning and listen out for the Rothery magic.

What I have come to appreciate are some of the individual tracks they have made - The Great Escape, Ocean Rain, and quite a few of the tracks on Marbles I liked, but I’ve never gone back. Fish on the other hand I must have now seen more than any other artist.

I’ve always wanted to like the Hogarth era band, but just can’t fully do it.

… maybe if they start playing Grendel again that’ll do the trick ;-))

I can totally understand all of that. I think for those of us that got Marillion at the begining we firstly fell in love with Fish, his lyrics and his incredible stage prescence. Still the only front man that the second he walked on stage and raised his hands I was clapping with him. I'd have followed him anywhere. Second to Fish was Rothery, arguably the most underated and less often talked about and seen in any top quitar players lists and yet some of his work and solo's are up there with the very best.

I think it was the musicianship and Rothery in particular that first drew me back in. His solo album was excellent -The Ghosts of Pripyat - and like you I also thought his band on the wall double nighter was phenomenal. It was due to Rothery I started enjoying Hogarth more and I do think its only fair to say that after 37 yrs and being the pioneers of the development of crowdfunding and what they have given back to their fans should be applauded with a standing ovation. Arguably the most approachable and normal fan friendly band you could wish to come across.

Here's my 40yr ol denim jacket embroidered with the Jester from Script ny my late Dad signed by Fish and Rothery. And me with Rothery at the Band on the Wall.

To bring it back on point imagine being at the Rush Power Windows gigs when Marillion supported them in 1986 wow!

The band have just started a live playback of the full never before seen 1984 show, released today as part of the Special Edition box set. It sells at £300 but the screening tonight has it in full on their YouTube channel.
It just started about 10 mins ago …

Watching it now.... fantastic stuff. Have the original vhs of this. Was always my favourite concert film of theirs. Got my ticket for Friday in Manchester sorted in a years time.

If there are tickets available for the 2nd Manchester gig nearer the time, I may go for it, especially with them changing the set up each night which they have never really done before.

Just watched it. I’ve seen the 1 hour edit loads of times over the years as I’m sure we all have.
Best bits? All of it. But that version of Between The Wheels is one of the greatest things I’ve ever heard.
Also mentions for Red Lenses, Vital Signs, Enemy With/Weapon/Witch-hunt trilogy. Love the slightly more uptempo Subdivisions too, probably my favourite of all their tracks for the last 20 years.

Generally more punchy bass/vox in the mix I thought. But you can really see The Police influence here esp on Alex’s guitar sound.

Anyway, in summary: absolutely brilliant.

Yeah, agreed - check out of some of the variations in the North American setlists maybe?

Superb stuff. Agree on this version of subdivisions. They really played fast in those days, especially the Signals tour. Check out the Montreal bootleg footage on YouTube from then. It's lightning quick.

Exactly mate. I'm sure once I see them on the Friday I won't be able to keep away knowing they are still in my city a couple of days later!
Yeah I live 15mins from the ground and the thought of being sat in the house on a Sunday night watching shite whilst Rush were playing on the City campus would have drivem me mad so it had to be done. Not told Mrs 2112 yet though.

They are about to start there Final Tour ever (88 shows across America, Canada and Europe ) this evening at Inglewood, California.
Can't wait to see them next year at the Co-op Arena...

Go on mate. First 3 songs played tonight when they hit the stage (about 4am UK time). What’s it gonna be?
