Yep he offered to freeze the lines a number of times, but putin is obsessed with trying to have all the Donbas including places russia has zero chance of taking, he basically wants to be able to get land behind huge Ukrainian defence fortifications for free.
Which then puts Ukraine at risk again if putin decides he wants more he's now bypassed the strongholds.

Zelensky quoted as saying he would freeze the lines as they are now to secure peace, if true that seems a huge change in language from previous statements and might be a significant step forward to ending this, would also give Putin enough to save face back home.

Putin wants the fortress towns. And Ukraine would be insane to concede them.

Not just thr Donbas - Zaporizhzhia, Kherson, Mkkoliv,and Odessa with a buffer zone in Sunny & Kharkiv were the minimalist aims. Everything west of the Dnipro was next on the wish list - But the reality was Putin wanted the whole lot.

I took that as meaning something else. He said he would freeze the lines now to secure a ceasefire and start diplomatic negotiations.

interesting though that that's the only part of the Mykolayiv Oblast occupied by Russia.
