is it just me,or does anyone else think todays verdict not to bring charges on the police officer who caused the death of ian tomlinson,` stinks to high heaven!`the thug is caught on camera carrying out an unprovoked attack.the organisations involved in this debacle should be ashamed.its tarnished the reputation of the police force and the justice system.

It is the medical evidence that doesn't stack up. Three different post mortems and two different causes of death.
No prosepct of a successful prosecution. Any half decent defence lawyer would have had a field day.
Has to be the same rule for everyone. You can't invent a particluar law just because its a police officer involved

two post mortens agree that the assault by the pc attributed to his death and the police post morten said natural causes and that patholigist is currently suspended because of dubious previous postmortens, the more you look into the case the more it stinks and the cps have accepted the pc did assault him.

They may not have been able to make a manslaughter charge stick due to the fudged medical evidence, but at the very least the pig was caught bang to rights on an assault charge. The video evidence is clear. This was an unprovoked act of thuggish violence by a cowboy copper against an innocent member of the public. The bastard should be named, shamed, sacked and jailed.
The CPS is an absolute joke. It is unaccountable and yet has huge power. We should have the American system where the DA is elected, and can be voted out of office if the public do not agree with his record.
What we have at the moment are is secretive, unaccountable clique which often denies justice to the victims of crime through plea bargains or decisions not to prosecute, rather than taking a chance on a jury trial unless they are certain of a conviction.
As a report by think tank Civitas said this week, its decision making is often ruled by the lefty PC brigade and something called the Black Crown Prosecutors Association, which has led to a situation where race and religious hate prosecutions are almost exclusively brought against white people, while often outrageous offences by ethnic minority racists are ignored.
The CPS should be disbanded altogether and replaced with a new system of elected public prosecutors

Thanks for your reasoned argument

Video footage and nearly 300 witnesses, it's a disgrace. The Met dragged the case out for so long that even a charge of common assault wouldn't stick, even though the evidence is there for all to see. He took no part in the protests, was walking away from the officer with his hands in his pockets.

I'm glad that the advent of video phones means that not every police officer is held aloft as a hero and a paragon of virtue. Along with the high profile De Menezes case, this is another example of the corruption in the system that is further straining police / public relations.

It seems to me that at times the police are above the law. They are ordinary people and should be held no more or no less accountable than the rest of the general public.

As I said on another thread, five years ago today a number of police officers (althought they may well have been SAS) followed an innocent man onto a tube train and shot him a number of times, killing him.

They then put their heads together and concocted a pack of lies to cover up their murder. Their boss also gave the press a complete cock and bull story, even though it was already clear they'd made a serious and fatal mistake.

This pack of lies was comprehensively demolished by the statements of independent witnesses at the scene yet not one of those officers was prosecuted or sanctioned in any way. The only charges faced by anyone was a corporate charge against the Met for failing to ensure the victim's "health & safety". They were found guilty but the officer in charge of the operation (who presumably gave the order to shoot) was deemed not culpable. she was later promoted and awarded a medal.
