The treatment of Manuel in Fawlty Towers?

[Sybil]: I don't know why you wanted to hire [Manuel], Basil.
[Basil]: Because he's cheap and willing to learn.
[Sybil]: Why did you say you could speak the language? (Spanish)
[Basil]: I speak classical Spanish, not the dialect he seems to have picked up.
[Sybil]: It'd be easier to train a monkey.

Would a script like that be allowed on TV nowadays?

fuck no, shit i recon if ken barlow picked a custard cream over a bourbon he would be doomed as a racist biggot

Milligan got near the mark with Pakistani Daleks and Alf Garnett wouldn't have made it past the 'i have a great idea for a show' stage.

The dog in Dambusters would be a no-no as well.

No real connotations there Bob.
Check the one where the Major tells Faulty about taking a young lady to Lords to watch England v West Indies. Now that's what you call on the edge material.

Love thy neighbour. It wouldn't last 5 minutes nowadays, but about 40 years ago this show run for 4 years and 7 series.

all humour is at someone's expense and I don't believe you can censor it.

the only question that remains is one of taste, and that is self-evident.

Fatty Owls was very funny (to me) although I wouldn't consider anything untoward about it - it actually makes fun of bigoted stereotypes, especially when Basil walks into see Sybil in a hospital and meets an ethic doctor like he's just walked into a brick wall and hit his head on it.

every programme in every series of 'the comedians' from the early 70's. full on racist jokes delivered & broadcast without a second thought. bernard manning was just one of the regulars & even the mixed race charlie williams would frequently tell 'p*ki' jokes.

Very true. And anyone who can't see that the comedy makes fun of these people rather than the minorities obviously doesn't understand the humour.
