Kurt Zouma: Saint-Etienne Starlet Catches the Eye of Manchester United

Saint-Etienne has high hopes heading into this season with their combination of talented youth and experienced leadership, and are counting on this combination to take them into European competition going forward. One of the young talents key to this squad is defender Kurt Zouma.

Zouma is compared favorably to former French great Marcel Desailly. He's physical, fast and highly skilled for a young player—attributes which have put him on the radar of several teams. The Daily Mail is reporting that Manchester City, Manchester United and QPR had representatives at ASSE's game against Lille to watch the young centerback.

The same article also reported that Queens Park had readied a bid for Zouma. It is easier to fight off the likes of QPR when they come after your prized assets, but if both the Manchesters and Juventus have serious interest, then Saint-Etienne will have trouble holding onto the centerpiece of their future.

Manchester City and Manchester United have both endured a rather quiet transfer season by their standards. Zouma's signature would not be seen as a signing that would help Sir Alex Ferguson or Mancini secure the title this season for their respective clubs. Zouma would find himself behind established defenders at either of the Manchester clubs.

Any interest by the three clubs mentioned would be a move for the future. While Zouma could step in and contribute in cup matches as a sub, it remains to be seen if his progress has him ready for such a big step at a young age.

We have Karim Rekik who is at the same age, and any centre backs who we will bring in will have the experience to step up straight away.

Manchester City send Patrick Vieira to snatch Zouma from Manchester United

Last Thursday we brought you a transfer story from France that had gone under the radar compared to many similar rumours. Le10 magazine ran a piece detailing Manchester United's interest in Saint-Etienne's young defender Kurt Zouma. They claimed that Sir Alex Ferguson's team had invited Zouma over to England to watch a game at Old Trafford, a tactic used by the club to impress young players before.

Manchester Untied had been linked previously but they'd kept this escalation quiet up until Le10's scoop, the previous links between Zouma and other clubs had gone quiet due a injury suffered earlier this year.

As our own Tom Coast explained:

Unfortunately, his first season came to an abrupt stop when, in April 2012, he suffered an injury needing an operation that would keep him sidelined for 3 months. In a stark contrast to how most footballers spend their time on the sidelines, he took it upon himself to study and obtain a “Baccalauréat économique et social”.

Prior to his injury, his performances did not go unnoticed. Rumours surfaced that Manchester City had offered him a €200k/month contract along with interest from Manchester United and Juventus. This promptly urged Saint-Etienne to offer him a 2-year contract prolongation, which will see him stay at the French club until 2016.

Now, unfortunately for Manchester United, their neighbours City are back in the hunt. The same outlet, Le10, say that Patrick Vieira travelled to France last week to attend a Saint-Etienne match. Zouma didn't make an appearance for Saint-Etienne because he's out with an ankle injury, but it's hard to believe that Vieira left without at least speaking to him.

Manchester City have been using Vieira to help them with recruitment and he's irritated Manchester United before on this, Paul Pogba stated advice from the World Cup winner helped him make up his mind to move from Old Trafford to Juventus.

Tuttomercatoweb quoted Pogba as saying in October "Many clubs including AC Milan were interested, but I chose Juventus because it is the team of Platini, Zidane and Vieira. Players of the past I've always admired, I spoke with Vieira and he advised me to come to Turin."

Kurt Zouma is certainly increasing in popularity and if Manchester United had wanted to keep their interest under wraps, it doesn't look like they'll get their way.

Watched him play yesterday as RB and he impressed me. He's pretty much as described in the bleacher report article.
