Why didn't they try to sign Toby instead?

Because the club has identified vast experience as a prerequisite for the new defensive signing.

And Kompany is such an important player for us that we shouldn't be buying right footed CBs entering their prime. If we are buying right footed CBs we should (and it seems will) target young talent who won't mind developing behind Kompany or a CB that is near the end of his career that doesn't mind being Kompany's backup.
