Gambling Addiction in England

Correct... A lot of media ignore this severe issue in this country... Hmm, I wonder why?

Perhaps with a large amount of the immoral scum having advertising on their websites/newspapers/tv programming.

I don't gamble.
I have an older brother "luckily" and saw him waste away thousands betting on the football.
Taught me to avoid.

I raised an issue with dispatches, other journalists and so on years ago now about underage lads using their own debit cards to gamble online.
I had extensive evidence and what happened?

Fuck all.

To much money to be made mate that's why nobody cares.

The bookies don't care where the money comes from.

I haven't gambled in years but I used to do it all the time. I have some friends who live in England who have a gambling problem and I'd like to help them but I don't know what it's like over there. It seems that gambling is pretty much everywhere (sports, horses and slot machines). But what if you have a problem? Is it possible to self-exclude from casinos or racetracks? Can you somehow ban yourself from betting on sports?

Any information would be welcome.
Hi mate, I work for Betfair's corporate team, so I would hope to know a fair bit about this. There are several self help tools on betfair, which are easily accessible through the 'my account' screen, which include self-exclusion for any length of time. I'm sure this is the same in other online bookies. You can self exclude from high street stores as well, and the staff have a responsibility to monitor customer behaviour and question whether punters are sound of mind to keep gambling etc. You can also go on any number of gambling help sites such as gamcare.org.uk or gambleaware.co.uk.

I used to work in a bookies, there was one bloke who would come in and bet hundreds on the favourite, shit odds but he'd double up when it came in. Then we got fixed odds roulette machines, a couple of Chinese lads hogged them all day. I've personally only bet on three things. The dogs, the footy (never City) and cards.

Edit; make that 4. The grand national too

I don't think that sending it underground and losing the few safeguards and regulations that exist would be a wise move. It should still be legal, but I really think the amount (and type) of advertising could be looked at.
It really needs to. I gamble everyday if I'm honest and I do pretty well, there's too many who don't thought and a lot handle it badly. Everywhere you go these days these bastards are advertising and the funny line always gets me "when the fun stops. Stop." If only it was that easy for 99%!

At belle vue I usually come out up. Never won the national. Lucky 15 on the footy usually gives results (it's easy, top vs bottom 4 times). Playing cards is something I'm good at.

Thanks for the info, I want to help these people but that's the kind of stuff I needed to know.

But other than online services, how would one avoid slot machines (I think you call them fruit machines)? Are they in most bars and pubs? Is there a way to self-exclude from them as well?

If people have a problem with gambling then the only solution is G.A.
The gamcare from the bookies don't really want you to stop, they're basically saying we want you to spend £50 instead of £100 in our shops or online, we don't want to lose your custom.
Whereas at G.A. the main objective is to stop you gambling full stop. Kill it dead.
