Gambling Addiction in England

Only a dickhead uses payday loan firms anyway. There is such a thing as responsible betting.
Putting money on stuff is half the fun sometimes. I'm too long in the tooth and I'd never bet on City, but I'd bet on other matches and sporting events.

ps my dad swapped a carpet for a fruity, so I grew up with a bandit in my room

Fuck that. No way a bird is getting access to my accounts. Man up and stop with the gambling.

Tony we get it, you don't have a gambling problem. Clearly some people do and this is supposed to be a thread to help them. Not sure your comments are adding much to help those who might need it.

Gambling Addiction is a joke its all about greed and chasing your losses. I look at it in 1 way. I bet. I only bet what I can afford to lose. I dont bet daily I do it in the sport i have interest in thats all no more and no less. Yes i have got some decent wins with a small amount of money on it but if i break even on the day I am happy. I think those betting machines in England should be banned there like crack machines and the bookies make a killing out of them. IF they ban them it might help out for some people. I honestly think that the bookies on the street should be a 21 age limit. I see kids of 18 going into our local bookies betting on the cartoon races and losing money.

I'm financially secure so have never had to use a Payday loan company, but Payday loans serve a purpose and if used correctly for the right purpose work out more cost effective than a bank loan
Lending a drunk bloke £200 on a Friday night for him to gamble is not responsible, which is why there should be a 24 hours cooling off period

Yes there is responsible betting, just like there is responsible drinking
I would hope you are responsible, but with comments such as the one quoted I've a feeling you have a problem as you're so defensive

I had £2 on 2-1 City on Saturday. I was optimistic until we scored a third! I rarely bet more than £5 and it's a laugh.

Hi mate, I work for Betfair's corporate team, so I would hope to know a fair bit about this. There are several self help tools on betfair, which are easily accessible through the 'my account' screen, which include self-exclusion for any length of time. I'm sure this is the same in other online bookies. You can self exclude from high street stores as well, and the staff have a responsibility to monitor customer behaviour and question whether punters are sound of mind to keep gambling etc. You can also go on any number of gambling help sites such as gamcare.org.uk or gambleaware.co.uk.

Most online firms have a self exclusion option or a set limit that customers are allowed to gamble with in a certain period.

The big problem is that there's now so many shops on the high street. Most are open for 16 hours a day, so if someone really wants to gamble then they are able to do so with relative ease.

As was mentioned earlier, FOBT's are are a real problem and the reason why there's so many shops on the High Street. I don't think I've ever entered a shop where there's less than the maximum of four in there. Again on the face of it, it's a commendable idea to impose a shop limit, until you realise that there's another three retail outlets from the same organisation within 500m of each other.

As you work for Betfair's corporate team, how do you reconcile that your organisation regularly targets customers with emails to play online slots and arcade machines. Yet at the same time will limit the stakes of the same punters on the Sportsbook and make them ineligible for bonuses and price boosts etc?

Let's face it, Betfair (and every other bookie) are happy to push the slots as it's a guaranteed income. As soon as a customer might have a perceived edge on the Sportsbook, they quickly become gubbed.

Behave mate. Am I not allowed to comment? Addicted to betting is idiotic and I'll call people out on it. What has put your nose out of joint to multi quote me and try to call me out? Wind it in man.

Anyone else ever betted on the scum in a derby just to cushion the blow if things go tits up?

I've never used them either and never would. A friend of mine got into deep shit due to the interest rates, her experience further put me off. Gambling is something else. It's meant to be fun, a game. When it stops being enjoyable it's time to stop altogether.
