    The Labour Government

It's almost as if the state knows it's going to be picking up any shortfall, or paying the cost of poor health, if people retire with little or no pension. Makes sense to put as much of the money they have for staff costs into staff pensions. I'd hope that auto-enrolment is gradually pushed up...

    Keir Starmer

I always loved the story about Dennis Skinner sitting outside an event that some of his fellow MPs went to, because there would be free drinks.

By the look of it, he is getting charged individual hospitality prices. Looks like he just goes to quite a few matches.

But then he'd have to declare it as hospitality :)

    The Labour Government

You're right - I was reading Oct 22 instead of last year, but yeah, had been looking at a chart without the extra Government cap.

    The Labour Government

So far, we've had this, wealth taxes, "redefining" down of the borrowing rules, plus the potential to borrow via the Crown Estate hookup for the energy stuff, all floated. Given that Reeves and others have been talking about transformational change, which is going to be difficult in the current...

Wonder how much it would cost for that level of hospitality at Arsenal? I'm guessing even Prime Ministers can't afford £20k for a full box every time they want to go to see a match.

    The Labour Government

I can imagine everyone who dies this winter being blamed on Labour. Whether more pensioners struggle may well mostly depend on the weather, but given that the energy cap was £3549 last October, and is now £1923, it's clearly a lot more complicated than just not getting an extra £300.

Did you read the Times article? It suggests that we're looking at something very different to the PFI deals of the past. Even has a quote from the National Audit Office, saying the newer style deals include 'good practice to help new schemes avoid these problems [i.e. the old style PFI deals]'...

    Liverpool Thread | 2024/25

A few weeks ago there was a glut of "Klopp has left a golden legacy" articles in the press. All pushing the story that Slot had no excuses as he'd inherited a wonderful young team, who were only going to get better. It struck me as really odd, particularly as the stories were coming from the...

    The Conservative Party

How rich do you have to be, to be called Money-Coutts? I was looking for a joke about marrying Money, but the real story is even more depressing. "In 1875 Francis Money, as he was then named, married Edith Ellen Churchill. In 1881, his mother Clara's sister Angela Burdett violated the terms of...

    Banning smoking in beer gardens

Most of the ads you see served alongside videos are UK ones, so for the big ones like You Tube or Facebook, I expect it will just be complied with. It's mostly big multinationals that sell junk food, so they're probably used to dealing with similar rules. For things like US made videos, think...

    Is fast food dead?

After reading Fast Food Nation, I'd certainly be more relaxed about eating junk food in the UK and EU. In the US, there's a hell of an effort that goes into producing it, but most of that effort appears to be aimed at making it as cheap as it possibly can be. The bit in the book about having to...

    Banning smoking in beer gardens

Other reports suggested it would be a ban on TV before 9pm (and obviously that included on demand, which kids will watch), AND a ban on social media. The way it read was that it would be a total ban on social media ads for junk food, but pretty sure that can also be timed for ads that are...

City "have made the PL uncompetitive"

Obviously 8 in 13 now - so similar to that Liverpool percentage, but still a few titles to add before we're ruining it like they did ;) But more importantly five of those 13 went to the last day of the season, and all five involved Man City. Even with our 100 point season, we threw in a last...

    The Labour Government

The government doesn't know everyone's financial situation on a day by day basis. You could combine the tax and benefits systems, but even that only gives a partial picture. They don't know immediately if a couple move in together, or separate, they don't know how much a self-employed person is...

Because they "know" the approximate numbers who should be eligable, but don't "know" exactly who they are.

PL charge City for alleged breaches of financial rules

Thought this was an interesting read on a complex financial case, and the legal challenges, disclosure etc. While City are not in the same league, it does show just how difficult it can be to deal with investigations that cover businesses in multiple countries. Doubt the Premier League enjoys...

It's nothing like the same thing. One is legal, and the successful refugees get to go to the country they applied in. The other is illegal, and the refugees end up in a poor African country, from where they're likely to just try and make the same trip again.
