    UK far right trouble

A few days of rain, and people realising they'll go to prison will dampen things down. People that are sympathetic to some extent is probably above 10% though - but I suspect that's just grumbling for most down the pub. People actually out on the streets is nowhere near 1%. Could be more like...

When a band hits the peak and is caught live on camera

I'd agree - and that looks amazing - but I also suspect they overdubbed most of that for the documentary.

    The Labour Government

That interview is really odd. There are genuine questions to be asked about the performative politics of the 'black hole' and what choices were made - but I don't understand why they expect her to be in a position to answer yes/no to every question about things that might happen in the next few...

Alvarez done deal - £82m to Atletico

Perhaps, but it's a bit more complex these days surely? Wingers are some of the highest scoring players at plenty of big clubs, and even when Alvarez plays as the main centre forward at City (which he's done in less than half his matches), he's not playing a traditional role where he gets to hog...

Alvarez done deal - £82m to Atletico

Wouldn't Alvarez match that at his current rate if he also stayed 7 seasons? He's got 36 goals in 2 seasons and 6007 minutes of football. (18 a season, and a goal every 167 mins). Sterling got 131 in 7 seasons and 25087 minutes of football. (19 a season, and a goal every 191 mins). I loved...

    The Labour Government

Haven't they already said they're going to go after as much of the Covid fraud as possible, and are setting up a Covid fraud commission to do this? As for the Bamford tax case - they've said they'll target the tax gap...

    The Labour Government

"Austerity" in 2010 wasn't just about avoiding higher taxes and borrowing - it was a political decision to cut the size of the state, in the misguided impression that it was "crowding out" the private sector. For many Tories, cutting the size of the state was probably an end in itself, but...

Previous UK government ‘covered up’ financial turmoil ahead of election

And yet just 1% pay it every year. Having over 6k of non housing/car assets isn't unusual, but how many have £6k+ of disposable assets that grow in value, that they need to sell in one tax year? Looking at the guidance, the suggestion is that it's paintings, antiques etc. Not your sofa and TV...

Previous UK government ‘covered up’ financial turmoil ahead of election

Absolutely. It's a truly bizarre situation that so many people think IHT is unfair and would scrap it, when it affects so few people. If you told the majority you were introducing a tax that would target just the richest few percent, they'd be all for it.

    The Labour Government

I'd imagine Labour will want to make those figures look good for the Tories, before they ease off with the negativity.

Previous UK government ‘covered up’ financial turmoil ahead of election

Around 1% of taxpayers will pay CGT in a tax year. Even over a ten year period, that only rises a couple of percent. It's not really a 'working people' tax.

I think they'd already softened before today, but these are two tweets from during the speech, from Paul Johnson and Ban Zaranko, also of the IFS.

Previous UK government ‘covered up’ financial turmoil ahead of election

Interesting tweet from Paul Johnson of the IFS - who was most prominent with "the books are already open" argument.

Previous UK government ‘covered up’ financial turmoil ahead of election

It's not a full audit really. There's clearly a mix of what was already known before the election, and areas where they expected to find the reality didn't quite match the figures. There's certainly truth in the statements about the books already being open, but I notice that there's a bit of...

It'll be interesting to see how it affects taxpayer support for other areas of his business. INEOS is a big employer in the UK, and working in areas that are impacted by Labour's energy policies. Take away United, and you've still got them getting potential support to keep Grangemouth open. But...

    The Labour Government

I agree with a lot of that, but I'd argue that the Tories haven't really been trying anything coordinated for years. Since 2015 they've been more interested in Brexit, or fighting for position. Add in Covid and Ukraine, and it's been a lot more reactionary. Seven Tory Health Secretaries since...

    The Conservative Party

The problem for the Tories, is that even 16 years after the Global Financial Crisis, they were still blaming Labour. It worked for a couple of elections, but they knew they were going to lose last month, and yet were still pushing the "Labour destroyed the economy" line. A party that was a bit...

I'd assume lots of hospitals need a lot of work. This 40 "hospitals" always looks a bit like the the list of transport projects that came out after HS2 was cancelled. The idea was more important than the detail. labour's big health ideas appear to be about getting people out of hospitals, or...

    The Labour Government

On the environment, social housing, asylum, they're already planning or have announced things that are very different to the Tories. So far, Reeves has said she's likely to give public sector workers an above inflation rise (remember one of the main planks of austerity was the pay freezes for...
