    Reading Challenge 2024

@WickyWain Apologies as I've only just seen your edit. When I first read The Lies of Locke Lamora, I felt that the 2nd book was a let down. But on a subsequent reads, I think it more than stands up. If you enjoyed the first book, you'll definitely want to keep on reading. Just a shame it's been...

    No problem from me.

Rock Evolution – The History of Rock & Roll - 1961 (pg 62)

In all of the articles that I have read around the subject, reading up for the various write-ups I'm doing, it does seem that America led the way and much of what we had in the UK a pale imitation. Obviously we have centuries of traditions of folk music in the UK and Europe in general, but by...

"Pictures of Matchstick Men" is a song by Status Quo, which is all I've got, but I don't take you for a Quo fan and the ship (Oil tanker?) doesn't fit.

A decent score for The Charlatans Tellin' Stories - an average of 7.00 but perhaps a disappointing return in only 13 votes, two of which were from guests. Thanks to those of you that did listen and comment. Let's hope that participation picks up as the weeks progress. Now it's over to @bennyboy...

I'm not sure that the Australian Open was considered such a big thing until relatively recently. It's officially been a slam since 1923,but due to Australia's remoteness, plus an inconvenient December/January timeslot, major players often didn''t play. Borg only played once, Connors twice...

"Technical proficiency at their instruments" - this above all else. Music isn't worth it to me if an artist isn't trying to do the best they can with their instruments. It's why I just can't get into any hip-hop or the like - whilst there may be technical skill, it isn't artistic. It's the same...

I just thought that the Doo-wop version from the 60s is the best so I didn't bother nominating any of the other versions!

No problem, just glad people are willing to engage with this thread. Soon, we will be moving into the year-by-year phase and I'm sure Rod will get his turn.

Was going to mention "When You Wish Upon A Star". Disney has been responsible for some fabulous songs over the years.

Your first paragraph is spot on. When you get into music (in my case, the mid-80s), everything sounds shiny and new and wonderful and different, but as the years go by, you realise that most things have been done before. It's just how a song or an album is repackaged with slightly different...

Shame the UK are out as I know that a lot on here love the women’s game. But hopefully we can now watch Sinner, Nadal and Alcaraz duke it out in the Davis Cup. Come on BBC, do the right thing!

    Prostate cancer

I didn’t realise that. It does seem early. I guess all of these things are worked out on the balance of probability but as we know, people get cancer at all ages. Re the “no routine screening”, I agree. The experts say there’s no easy test but it’s got to be to do with money.

2nd time you’ve done it. I assumed the first was a typo but now I’m not so sure :) It’s Cliff Richard - without the s.
