    Literacy: That Reading Thing

I would be happy to support something like this. Some of my favourite talks/sessions I’ve done have been with schools and also with homeless centres where my talks have helped bring a bit of positivity and given people an opportunity to share some positive memories via footballing stories. Let...

    First ever Manchester Derby final

There’s a variety of feelings going through my head at the moment. City can do this but we need to remember how we felt prior to the 2011 FAC semi. We got our heads in the right place, did the Poznan and all of that to win the support battle, which gave us an edge on a day when clearly they had...

Response to Bayern Munich fans banners for next week

To Match the absurd nature of their Mansour Out banner why not a simple retro Swales Out banner. The world’s media will zoom in on it thinking it’s some MCFC fan negativity towards someone within our ownership/club without sudssing quite what we mean. By the time they’ve filmed it the laugh will...

    Hyde Road Stadium

Yes - the photo is definitely OT and the testimonial was a regular league game. Back then testimonials were often ordinary league games and the player involved would not only get the profits but also money collected on the day. In my first book (From Maine Men To Banana Citizens) I included a...

Blue plaque on The Aces pub

Not the same pub as the one used in Shameless. That one was at the eastern end of ‘modern’ Clowes St and was called the Wellington: https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/local-news/shameless-pub-shuts-down-886606 The Aces is here: https://whatpub.com/pubs/MAS/4051/aces-gorton The...

The 39th anniversary of the "Good Friday Disagreement" between Oldham & City fans

It was a crazy day. Those ladders were from the TV gantry opposite stand. It was like a keystone kops thing when the City fans legged it across the plastic pitch with them. They then put them up in the Main Stand paddock and climbed into the directors box. I‘ve often wondered if the guys in the...

    Hyde Road Stadium

I did some talks to the Academy a decade ago and took them on a tour of West Gorton, showing them the site of St Mark’s and the first pitch. I’m not employed by City otherwise I suppose that Armitage visit may have been a possibility

    Hyde Road Stadium

The top image is from c.1907 and the multispan roofs were erected in 1910 on 3 sides of the ground. City then boasted Hyde Rd had covered accommodation for 35,000 in a 40,000 stadium. New Old Trafford had cover for about 10,000 at that time.

Attendance Facts - MCFC & LFC Comparison

I’m finding some of the comments on my Facebook funny. There are fans saying we can’t fill our stadium then same people are saying we’ve no ambition if we’re extending to 60,000. So many contradictions and inaccuracies. One guy’s even said we only have 60,000 fans. Blimey!

    Hyde Road Stadium

The student was JF Maille perhaps? Thanks for the comments I really appreciate them. There are so many myths, errors and inaccuracies out there that get repeated simply because people just take the stories and don’t dig deep. I’ve always (since 1980s) spent considerable time looking for multiple...
