    2024 - a tough year or a good one?

Pretty mixed. First half of the year ok. Pretty steady albeit I didn't get as much fishing done as I had planned. Second half not great. One of my kids marriage has failed. One of my grandkids is having behavioural problems. The world seems increasingly unhinged. Second year of trying to keep my...

Rock Evolution – The History of Rock ’n’ Roll - Pop pre-1960 (pg 38)

I think Mozart as a child played to audiences that would not normally be concert goers. By and large though classical music was mainly for the upper levels of society.

Rock Evolution – The History of Rock ’n’ Roll - Pop pre-1960 (pg 38)

I think there were artists for each strata of British society which gradually relaxed after the WW2 until it formed round 'easy listening' in the 50's. Did the toffs bop to Gracie and George Formby? Did the plebs get off on Noel Coward (who was a plastic toff not a real one)? Everyone liked Matt...

Rock Evolution – The History of Rock ’n’ Roll - Pop pre-1960 (pg 38)

My comment was really about weight of numbers and innovation rather than the individual quality of artists. Was he the dude that did tijuana brass? ;-)

Rock Evolution – The History of Rock ’n’ Roll - Pop pre-1960 (pg 38)

It is a pale imitation across every genre. How much did things change in the 60's and who dominated through the decades we will get a feel for as this thread matures. Its an interesting topic. Luckily we have a view from the west. I wish Foggy was contributing though as well.

Rock Evolution – The History of Rock ’n’ Roll - Pop pre-1960 (pg 38)

In listening to the four playlists so far. American music dominates. I suppose I should have realised that but I did find it interesting. When did that pivot I wonder. My guess is around 1964.

    Positive BBC thread

I dislike them intensely as an organisation for multiple reasons. The majority of their programming is banal and cliched. They do occasionally broadcast some gems though. Currently, Wolf Hall is as good as it gets. Bleak House the Dickens adaptation was very good. Happy Valley, Line of Duty...

Rock Evolution – The History of Rock ’n’ Roll - Pop pre-1960 (pg 38)

Our favourite song is of course Blue Moon, sung by many including Frank Sinatra and Billy Eckstine and Mel Tormé. Has to make the playlist.

Rock Evolution – The History of Rock ’n’ Roll - Pop pre-1960 (pg 38)

I think the most questionable is Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy from Company B which has clear jazz influences. But I like it ;-) Cole Porter deserves a spot. What about ‘Night and Day’ sung by another iconic artist Fred Astaire.

Some thoughts on pop music from the 20s to 1960. Some additions to threespires excellent list: Noël Coward’s witty and sophisticated songs, such as “Mad About the Boy,” made him a symbol of British high society. Gracie Fields, the “Lancashire Lass,” charmed audiences with her cheerful songs...

    Gas & Electricity

Mine has not been working for over a year despite multiple attempts from them to connect the electricity. I do agree with you that they are far better and more responsive than the others (in my case British Gas)

    Gas & Electricity

I have a smart meter supplied by Octopus. Gas readings have been extremely helpful in helping me manage my gas consumption. Electricity readings worked for two days and haven't worked since. Meter has been replaced and they still cant get the Electricity readings to work. They ended up giving me...

Ruben Dias - anti bullying champion

Maybe if bullying was stamped on at school there would be a good few less bellends in later life?
