    TV Series

The HBO series ‘Task’. Three episodes in and it’s shaping up to be extraordinary. Fans of ‘The Wire’ and ‘True Detective’ take note. So far it compares favourably to these shows.

Interesting exchange here if you follow the Q&A sequence back to the beginning, and then all the way through. Grok appears to have reverted to Hal 9000 mode (‘The 9000 series is the most reliable computer ever made. No 9000 computer has ever made a mistake or distorted information. We are all...

Shame that graffiti doesn’t say stuff like ‘Satan woz here motherfuckers’, or ‘All your base are belong to us - Canterbury Mosque’. As for the Christian fash who are getting all worked up about it, they should never forget that the Anglican Church has Rowan Williams AND Nick Cave.

    TV Series

I enjoyed the whole series. Thought it breathed new life into a stale franchise. I can understand your reservations, though. A relative of mine felt the same way. Some great acting and characters too (my personal favourite was the sheep*). *Not a significant spoiler for anyone yet to start...

    Last Film You Saw

American Fiction Saw it on BBC2 last night. It’s also on the iPlayer. Would probably appeal the most to fans of modern US literature. But it’s a clever and amusing film with some great dialogue and a terrific ending, and therefore deserves a wider audience.

How invested in politics are you and how does it affect you?

Wow! Those lyrics are extraordinary. I’d heard of Father John Misty before but never listened to anything by him until now. Love the allusion to Plato in the penultimate line. Also made me think of this passage from the Chuang Tzu: ‘In sleep, men's spirits go visiting; in waking hours...

How invested in politics are you and how does it affect you?

Am far too heavily invested in politics and it almost feels like an act of self-harm to spend so much of my retirement reading books on economics, Islam and the ‘culture wars’ in order to counter far-right narratives on X. Probably futile too, as Reform will probably still win in 2029 if WW3...

So Nigel Farage says those who attended the weekend Tommy Robinson rally were "good, ordinary, decent people". I bet some of them were. And I also bet that some of them are not entirely unlike the polite, cultured Wehrmacht officer in this chilling Jean-Pierre Melville movie:
