For the last 50 odd years I and everyone from my generation grew up believing the club was formed in 1894 ,in 1994 City celebrated its Centenary Aniversary also in 1994 a supporters club was formed calling itself the Centenary Supporters Association .pin badges books programmes have always said founded in 1894 .A lounge in the ground has been called 1894 lounge ,So why is it now suddenly popular to rewrite all of that to say we were founded in 1880 Don't tell me the the links to Gorton and St Marks only just been discovered because the have been known for Donkeys years

This thread was just made for Gary........

In response to the Centenary Supporters Association, it was actually formed in 94 as the Manchester City Independent Supporters Association and changed to the CSA a few years afterwards (can't recall the exact year) as the club didn't like the 'independent' bit seeing as they were still dishing out tickets and having player visits to meetings.

What Centenary do you think they were being named after ?
I wasn't being sarky, just correcting you when you said in 1994 the centenary supporters association was formed. It wasn't called that in 1994, but MCISA, my point being no one thought in 1994 ''we are 100 years old, lets form a new supporters association'', the name came about through the need to change the existing one a few years later.
Sorry if it comes across as pedantic, but over time details like this get lost in the haze and get recorded incorrectly, then (if repeated enough times) becomes the truth!

Agree. I don't support Gorton or Ardwick. Even City's phone number is 1894. The rags pretend they were formed in 1878 and not 1902 or 3 depending on which book you read. You can in a way understand their antipathy towards us. Must be upsetting knowing their history isn't as long as ours. Think its that little baby brother syndrome.

I Just don't get why there is a need to re wright history every man and his dog knew we were formed in 1894 but now for some reason it is popular to say we were formed at a Church .leave well alone is my opinion

It's not as though the club just sprang up from nowhere in 1894 though.

Gary's obviously much better placed to answer this than I am, but our records on the site date back to 1892, when we were still Ardwick FC:

I don't think we should ignore the formative years of our club, regardless of name.

If it wasn't for St Marks (West Gorton) there wouldn't be a Manchester City.
