1983: The Year We Avoided Nuclear War

I was in a pretty wild relationship with a girl a year older than me in school, not sure i'd have noticed a nuclear war anyway

They were, I watched a talk on Youtube a bit ago with one of the RN's top brass from back then, and he said we had a high level Soviet spy who told us if there was a war in Europe the Soviet plan was to nuke the uk, they thought with us out of the way the yanks wouldn't go all in.
And the response from the UK,s Trident missiles would have wiped out at least 6/7 major Russian cities (probably including Moscow). Hence why no shots were fired by the major protaganists. The whole nuclear weapons concept was known as MAD(Mutally Assured Destruction).

That’s a good example why we’d be mad to get rid of our deterrent when we don’t know what the world’s going to look like even in the near future.

It’s not the only one either. There was actually one in 1995 too when Norwegian rocket launch was mistaken for an incoming missile. Yeltsin actually activated the Nuclear briefcase for that one.

The 1973 Arab/Israeli war is also listed as a close call with Israel confirming they were prepared to win the war using “drastic” measures.

The Gulf war in 91 was dangerous as well. Israel whilst agreeing to stay out of it made it very clear indeed that were a chemical weapon to land on Israel they would retaliate with nuclear weapons....very simply Baghdad would cease to exist. Those weapons were loaded on their F15 Raams with a crew ready to go at a moments notice.

As we speak Israel is clear favourite to be the next nation to use nuclear weapons. They have made it clear that there will come a point where they will deal with Irans nuclear threat if the international community does not. The clock is ticking on that one, Israel are quite adamant that Iran simply will not have a nuclear weapon and there is no room for negotiation on the matter.

Agree. That area of the world and Pakistan/India is a dangerous area for future conflicts getting out of hand.

The latest clash between India and China (along a disputed border in the mountains) was fought using homemade clubs and edged weapons. Apparently no guns are allowed within a km of the border to stop violent clashes occurring,so each side has resorted to only carrying melee weapons.

Yes I remember reading about the 1995 one, Russians even confirmed they had opened their 'nuclear football' suitcase in preparation to launch.

Yes and Yeltsin was moments away from ordering a launch. Only when the rocket began to change course was it clear it was not aimed at Russia and they stood down.
