I oppose all kinds of cruelty at all times, be it to animals or humans.
But it's the Grand National that was on this week, which makes this an apt time to be commenting on it. In other weeks, I will comment on other injustices.
Rather than criticising me, let's stick to the point: this is a barbaric event in which many animals have greatly suffered and died. If nothing is done, that will continue to happen.
While I respect your view on 'cruelty at all times' and I think most people would be on the same side as you and support it.
I am not criticizing you, I am only pointing out your naivety, lack of understanding and selective moral stance.
You view horse racing as cruel and barbaric, but add nothing to back it up.
- How many horses refused to start in the Grand National?
- How many horses refused to jump a fence in the Grand National.
Horses will, if so desired, do both and no amount of encouragement by a jockey will persuade them otherwise.
If it was such a negative experience for a horse, then trust me, they wouldn't do it again and if you could 'force' them to, then they wouldn't jump and race with such enthusiasm?
You may not realize it, but horses are very much like people and have differing abilities and personalities. Some reach a point where racing doesn't interest them any longer and they are retired from the sport, whereas others can continue into their teens and still enjoy racing.
Taking a moralistic view on horse racing is very commendable if you see it as cruel, but why are you turning a blind eye to the serious aspects of animal cruelty, such as dog fighting and Halal slaughter?
Do you REALLY care about animal cruelty, or is this just a case of double standards and targeting a sport that is easy and visible, which can be easily fed into the quagmire of social media hysteria?
