20MPH Speed Limit - Wales

Why do you need to drive 30mph in a residential area?
You don't need to drive at any speed in any area. You drive at a speed that is safe for the road conditions. 30mph as a maximum speed is a perfectly safe speed to drive at in a residential area.
If you widen the debate to include air quality, which is what Drakeford has done, reducing the speed limit to 20mph makes air quality poorer as the vehicle is in 2nd gear and using more fuel, the likelihood of congestion increases further reducing air quality and leads to driver frustration which, whilst wrong, is a human trait and it does cause accidents.
All in all, a very poorly thought out policy.

You owe me a pint

20mph would be a dream in most of the Bournemouth/Christchurch and Poole conurbation, so the roads like ours with a 20mph speed limit (school and church nearby) are the only places where people can drive at speed, no police anywhere

I’d be very happy if they implemented a 20mph limit where I live tbh because most of the residential areas you wouldn’t go 30 anyway, the ones that do are going way too fast.

Ideally it’d be assessed road by road.

Our village still has 30mph signs up at present but almost everyone sticks to 20mph.

I don't have a problem with the new limit at all. It not as though it's adding hours to a journey.
In a village no, but a large town or city it most certainly does, sadly.

30 mph is legitimate if there are the repeater signs.... no repeaters in a lamppost area = 20 mph

Shows the politicians motives. I.e impress their eco warrior friends and get their jollies off annoying motorists because they don't drive and are chaffeured around so don't give a toss.

The millions spent on this scheme could've gone on improving existing roads, filling in pot holes etc.

Good on the Welsh for putting together a good petition and ensuring it gets good media coverage. Any similar schemes proposed in England or Scotland will be suicide for any party proposing it.
