I think it's the right move, it will encourage active travel and what the OP said about higher emissions is nonsense.
I'd love for my local road to school to be 20mph instead of 30.

In a village no, but a large town or city it most certainly does, sadly.

30 mph is legitimate if there are the repeater signs.... no repeaters in a lamppost area = 20 mph

I lived in that London for years (pre-congestion zone etc thankfully) and don't remember being able to drive anywhere at an average of much more than 15mph.
Living in the city is shite in so many ways.

Stopping distance at 30mph = 6 vehicle lengths.

In built up areas, a 20mph speed limit makes perfect sense.

I drove through north Wales on Thursday and today. The 20mph limit is ridiculous in most places, and actually caused road rage, and aggressive overtaking.
I think it's excessive.

People used to think wearing seat belts and drink-drive limits was ridiculous.

I know but it's kind of obvious so how far do you go 15 10 5 walk?

Do we close pubs because of scrapping

20 mph on a busy residential street or near schools is fine but 20 mph is really slow and not necessary. Cyclists go quicker it's general fuckwittery tbh.
