23 years ago. Rovers away.

I was in Abu Dhabi that great day but of course I was working and having to listen to it on the radio.
Got absolutely hammered that night in the Sheraton bar and ended up singing Blue Moon (well yelling it really) with their resident band, who were from...Liverpool. They liked us at the time. They were genuinely happy for us as I recall. "Great to see a club of that stature back where they belong...etc." Little did I know that firstly, we would go down again and secondly, the impact that Abu Dhabi would have on us...

Fuck, what a day that was. It was only afterwards that I heard about the crowds on the hill outside Ewood.

I got married the day before, in Bolton, and a wedding present from my wife’s work mate was 4 tickets in the Jack Walker stand, he was a Rovers season ticket holder, so it was me & my missus, and our kid and his missus, in the home end, my old fella, uncle, brother in law & mates in the Darwen end, straight after the game, our kid drove us to the Raddisson @ Manchester Airport, we went in the bar and we got ratarsed, flew off on honeymoon reading all the papers on the plane, it was a great weekend that turned into a great fortnight and still going strong 23 years later, having just celebrated our 23rd on Saturday.

Generally pretty optimistic. Kinkladze had agreed to stay and we had a bit of a rally at the end of the 1996/7 season. We’d signed Bradbury and won a pre-season friendly at Burnley where we looked the business and Bradbury scored. I think most blues thought we’d challenge for promotion that season. I’d be surprised if more than a handful thought we’d go down.
I did ;-)
