Definitely a position we need to strengthen.
Gündy was great there in 18/19, but we had David Silva doing what Gündy is doing now. Foden can't really do that (yet)
This season, we had great performances vs Chelsea, PSG away and Liverpool without Gundogan. We have players who can replace him at 8 or false 9. Only Gundogan has experience at 6, though, if we don't count Ferna. It's a no-brainer in case we need to replace Rodri in really important games.
I think that is a very accurate summary of where we are. Sad to see Ferna losing possession in dangerous areas in his last few games. The other alternatives all bring their own issues. Gündy would be a huge miss further up the field, same with Bernardo. Zinchenko is one of our three fullbacks so would also carry a major risk if we had to play him in midfield. De Bruyne doesn't really have the legs or discipline for it. Lavia has zero experience
Not a great set of options should Rodri miss any decent stretch of games
Sadly we had players in midfield but we did not have a midfield unit and didn't have enough quality up front to disguise it.Fern worries me far less than some others. He’s basically at the club now to give Rodri a rest when needed. There were others out on the pitch tonight who are supposed to be serious competition for other players in the team and they showed next to nothing.
Gundogan DM and Foden CA/AM? Sounds like UCL final and we all know the result...Gundogan would be by far the best option to replace Rodri. He was excellent in that position when he replaced Ferna in 18/19. Foden could replace Gundogan in CM/AM.
Lavia isn't an option at all. He's nowhere near being ready to play vs PL/CL teams. DM is a very difficult position requiring experience and quality, especially in a Pep team.

One game is a small basis for big generalisations. Many of the players weren't in top form at the end of the season. Only Walker and Jesus (from the bench) did well.
Anyway, who could replace Rodri if necessary? Without pointing out an alternative your response is pretty meaningless. Who could do better than Gundogan at DM? Ferna who is alteady well past his best or Lavia who has't played vs PL/CL teams and needs at least 2-3 years to reach the necessary level?
Hmmm....maybe Ake in DM? Pep's pulled off crazier ideas so why not.
Hes finished. Not sure why they extended his stay. Would be better off giving that midfield spot to levia.
He is on the coaching team and plays on the odd occassion rodders gets a rest , fuck sakeHes finished. Not sure why they extended his stay. Would be better off giving that midfield spot to levia.
People were demanding that he start in the CL final, don't forget. At the end of last season Fernandinho wasn't finished. The fact that we retained him after initially letting his contract dwindle down indicated, imo, that we had money for Grealish and only Grealish, but that we needed to sell first. We didn't have the money to spend on a left-back and a defensive midfielder as well, not without selling first. But Fernandinho was worth £0, we didn't have the money for a more expensive DM, do we just kept him on the books. Would like to see Lavia given a chance soon.Hes finished. True but he is also taking up a valuable squad spot, Rodri is playing a lot of football, too much for me, he will be knackered like last season at the business end.He is on the coaching team and plays on the odd occassion rodders gets a rest , fuck sake

If Rodri gets an injury, we are in serious trouble.
Sentiment and long term future at the club?It is not that valuable if we kept him
Because the DM in Pep's system must be pretty good at passing under pressure. He must be like a deep-lying playmaker in the build-up play, and not just a destroyer. Ake may be an option in some games (against vastly inferior teams), but not in very important games. Passing isn't his strength.
