The first ever live televised Manchester Derby took place on Sunday 14th October 1986 in which City's Mick McCarthy would score a brilliant bullet header to cancel out United's Frank Stapleton's opening goal during frantic a 1-1 draw.
John Gidman, signed a few days before from United, Imre Varadi & Tony Grealish made their City Maine Road debuts while former blue Peter Barnes was in the United line-up. Barnes would re-join City on a free transfer the following January. Youth team skipper Steve Redmond partnered Varadi up front.

At the request of City club sponsors PHILIPS, a one off set of shirts with a larger PHILIPS sponsor were produced for the fixture aimed at the new TV audience. The full kit was then given away by City to a group of Australian fans who had watched City’s end of season tour games.
Here's a few mementos from the game including signed Mick McCarthy match programme, original squad signed match ball from the fixture and Ian Brightwell's City match worn shirt which was tracked down in Australia.
