Barca have played this formation alot this season - Is Mancini practicing with this formation to try a take us to another level next season to compete. I personally think the tactic can work - lots of attacking options going forward, 5 at the back when defending.

Barca are still struggling with it .. it needs some precise team work.

Napoli are the best team I've seen so far who are doing it perfectly .. CL wise that is.

It's funny how things go.

Up until about the mid-late 1990s, three at the back was used in nearly every country, even England, though perhaps not quite so much here.

I remember Kendall used it at City for a while when he first came here.

Then everybody seemed to decide that a flat back four was the way forward and the sweeper system has hardly been seen since.

I think it could work for City, especially if the three are Vinnie, Micah and Joleon, with VK as the libero. We all know that Zaba, Clichy and AK have the engines to play as wing backs and I reckon Jimmy could too, if necessary.

I think it's an option that Bobby Manc should seriously consider.

I like the formation, but only if we play micah as the wing back not centre back. Against Liverpool he did not make one run down the wing second half as milner was there.

with the way wing backs are used these days this is leaving 2 central defenders possibly exposed. This formation allows for that yet still leaving 3 at the back. Considering most teams play with 2 up front at best, this formation still leaves 3 against 2 and gives more attacking option. Think it would be a particularly good formation when a team parks the bus

It's sad that the role Baresi and Sammer were in will never really be seen again. Even with 5-3-2 these days there tends to be just 3 regular centre halves. I used to love sweepers as a kid and modelled myself on them (obviously without the recognition Baresi and Sammer got although I was clearly just as good if not better....) so it's sad to see the art dying or having died out.

Hart
Savic kompany lescott
Richards Barry Clichy
Toure
Silva
Aguero. Balotelli
Something like this doesn't look bad

Could replace Savic with Zaba or Kolo (when he returns) and it looks even stronger

Kendal used it in the Everton 0-1 match at the start I remember, but it was more 5 at the back then 3. I'm sure Royle used it, e.g. the 2-3 at home to Ipswitch.

SWP made his name as a wing back under keegan with 3/5 at the back too.

It's all a case of where do you get your width from.
