Me and my mate are thinking of a quick break to ireland next month, flying Friday afternoon coming back Monday afternoon. Was thinking of a day/night in Dublin then getting a train to somewhere else. Neither of us have been to Ireland before. Any recommendations?

Cheers

Kilkenny
Wexford
Westport
Kinsale

I don't know anything about trains in Ireland but the first two should be do-able. The second two are worth a visit but might be a bit too far from Dublin

Your going to be robbed in Kilkenny a great town its about a hour and half away on the train from Dublin. You be paying more for Kilkenny for a hotel over the weekend than in Dublin. You could always travel up to Belfast from Dublin not too far to go up. Carrick on Shannon is a good spot but from Dublin might be a bit too far.

Any recommendations?
You could always get the train from Dublin to Westport and then fly back from Knock airport.
The airport is about 1 hour by coach but not sure of the time table.
Westport could be good especially if Mayo win the All Ireland final this weekend.
They'll still be celebrating at Xmas.
I was there last week and some of the pubs and restaurants were still closed.
Due to change soon and live music will be back before you intend to travel.

In all honesty, I couldn’t tell you what kind of night you’ll have in Dublin as things were closed for so long, I haven’t been to anywhere in thcity centre in such a long time…….

Besides The Ferryman on the Sir John Rogersons Quay last Wednesday where I met my brother in law for a pint before the Ireland V Serbia game and ended up staying and not going to the match.

A few decent suggestions in the thread so far.

Was in Kilkenny earlier in July. Still a great city. Surprised me as I hadn’t been in about 8 years and back then it was starting to get very Stag and Hen party orientated. Had a great weekend. Very good food and drink and you can get boutique hotels that will look after you.

Similarly with Carrick-on-Shannon, we are always treated like royalty in Cryan’s Hotel which won’t break the bank, but the food is of a high quality and plentiful and the bar will stay open for residents well into the morning.
There is the Shannon cruise too which had live music and Cryan’s Old Bar used to have great Trad sessions, that might be started again but mightn’t before 22nd of October. In general the end of the town down by the marina is more traditional while the opposite end is full of Hen parties.

Can’t really go wrong with Galway or Westport but both are a little further.

I’m not lying about hotel prices being expensive though. They’re milking us for the hardship they endured during lockdown.

Enjoy.
