It is quite something that that crowd was just a few thousand short of those inside Wembley on Sunday, but it doesn't compare, of course, with the 96k crammed inside The Swamp to watch The Donkeys play Cluj, nor the 99k crammed inside Anfield to watch the mighty Ludgorets.
 
What's even better is that those obsessed with these things spotted loads of empty blue seats at Maine Road among the "claimed" 84,569 even though the photos are of standing only terraces!

As was my mum with her mates right at the back of the terrace sat on the wall, aged 18. When I was a nipper she used to tell me about Eric Brook's goal and how it curled into the top corner of the net.

My father and uncle were there with my grandfather. It was, according to them, regular practice for kids to be squeezed in two or three at a time through the turnstiles in those days, and it was no different on that day.

I asked my uncle not too long ago about his recollection of the game, and his abiding memory was seeing blood all over the terracing after the game had finished when they were on their way out after most of the crowd had left.
 
God, that crush is terrifying. Never be allowed now, fortunately. A wonder there weren't any casualties.
 
Bet there were only 20,000 of the fuckers left at 80 mins.....

Bet they'd all fucking read the Ragged Trousered Philanthropist and decided to get all 'uppity' and not back the team. Fucking Plebs......

I wonder if they had a Family Stand that I could get all bitter about?
