4 Days in Rome

try and visit some of the places at obscure times to avoid the crowds.

Trevi fountain is a hell hole during peak times to visit - go either very early or late.

Coliseum is good and worth the visit

St Peter’s basilica was good, make sure to climb the steps to the top and see the Vatican garden. Amazing stuff.

We had a nice walk to the Aventine Hill to see through the keyhole.

Found all the restaurants pretty much the same. Can’t go wrong with Pizza.

Enjoy

Pre booking trips here - anyone been on the hop on bus.
Not done Rome but every big city I do I always do a hop on bus full trip, gives you a good idea of the layout of the city and you get to see all the landmarks……return to the ones that you’re interested in…..

Metro is easy to navigate as just 2 lines.
Book the Collisium and palatine on the web beforehand and watch the Americans growl when you by-pass them at the entrance.
Great City to walk from the Pantheon to the Vatican.
Every corner you have history associated to it Neil.

Visited for 4 nights last month.

Really impressive City. Got the Leonardo express from Fiumicino Airport which takes you directly into the City in half an hour.

We visited the Colosseum, Palatine Hill, Trevi, Pantheon, Vatican City, Villa Borghese, Vittoriano and Trastevere.

We mixed it up with the hop on, hop off bus and the metro.

Book the Colosseum and Vatican City trips, online in advance if you can.

You will have a fantastic time.

Done the hop on hop off bus on a day trip when based in Florence. It was excellent. Took in all the main sites and the service was very frequent. Would also recommend the train services in Italy to anyone. First class was cheaper than standard in UK, easy to book and kids went free. Used it between Rome, Florence and Venezia.

4 days is plenty of time, please make sure you spend an afternoon in Tratevere (South of the river). The ivy covered streets are lovely and there's quite a few nice restaurants around there. Jaculum hill is nearby which overlooks Rome.

The Jewish quarter is nice, some interesting dishes which is middle Eastern fused with Italian.

There's a bar (Aroma) that overlooks the coliseum and training grounds , beautiful in the sunset. It isn't cheap though, about £45 for 2 cocktails.

The rest goes without saying..

Vatican (make sure you book online)
Trevi fountain
Spanish steps
Coliseum (book online)
Marcelo theatre (5 minute walk from the Colesium and free to enter)
Pantheon (free to enter)
The Forum (if you are in to Ancient history)
Piazza Novana (back streets around there have some nice restaurants and bars)

I have done all of the above, all great.
The Vatican Museum is great and i loved the Sistine Chapel even though the silence is not followed by staff and punters. It can be really annoying punters trying to take photos followed by staff roaring telling folk to be quiet.

There’s a brand new chapel just around the corner which is absolutely spotless.
The Pristine Chapel is well worth a look.

The hop on hop off tour buses all originate by the train station. The green ones will take you into the countryside and onto the Appian way were the returning legions marched back into the city. See Spartacus etc where they crucified the slaves along each side of the road, as a warning to those that may follow.

You can also have a few scoops and a bite to eat by the roadside with brilliant vistas, hard to think your only 30 minutes outside Rome. The Appian Way houses underground catacombes where you can visit, but do keep a close eye on the bod in front, as they are a maze of windy tunnels and not the best place to get lost in.

There are several catacombs on the Appian, but the one with the most fascinating history is San Sebastiano. The catacombs of St Sebastian have over 12 km of underground tunnels. Very interesting visit and more to Rome than just the centre.

Go to Pyramide then catch the train to Ostia Antica. Massive archaeological site where you can just wander around. It’s not Pompeii but it doesn’t have the crowds and for the ancient town feel (streets, buildings, theatre etc) it’s a great trip and good to get out of the city and see the coast a bit too.

When I did St Peters there were two options - on foot or by lift.

Being a tight wad I took the cheaper option of on foot, the people who paid extra for the lift were conned as it only bypasses a small section of the stairs. If you go to the very top you have to lean sideways on the last section as the dome curves inward. Superb view at the top highly recommended.
