I don’t care if “it was only Burnley”, Stones was absolutely class.
In fact, given Burnley’s modus operandi, his performance is that much more impressive. This wasn’t a team that’s just going to shoot from distance or simply counter, which often times cannot be held against defenders when the ball ends up in the back of the net. They’re cloggers that simply launch the ball in the box and hope for the best. And John was a wall they couldn’t break through.
He had a five minute sequence toward the end of the match where I counted seven clearances (or defensive actions to prevent Burnley shots) alone.
Dias played well — and having a great leader beside him undoubtedly helped Stones — but I actually think John outshone him in this one (just).
It is of course still early days, and he’ll need to continue this form to truly give Pep selection headaches, but the signs are very promising.
And as someone that has consistently defended him and insisted there is a great player there being held back by psychological issues (that we are now all dealing with in some way because of these horrid times), I hope he succeeds, for all of us.
