50 years ago today - a first for Maine Road

David Cassidy (with Showaddywaddy) performed the first gig at Maine Road.

He came on for the encore wearing a City shirt and sang Bob Dylan's "It's all over baby blue"

I wrote a letter to the club when they announced there was going to be a concert suggesting The Who as they'd previously done a huge gig at Charlton Athletic's Valley ground.

The letter was printed in the West Ham home game programme, basically saying tough shit it's gonna be Cassidy haha

No doubt this went through the books as 5k attendance whereas it was more like 15k

Interesting that the tickets were printed and issued by City (complete with Bernard Halford’s signature) rather than the concert promoter as has been the case for many years now.
Stadium gigs in this country were in their infancy back then. I guess that they were making up the rules as they went along a little.
