His selection was far from hindsight for many,it was a recipe for disaster.

I agree, and i dont think ive seen it posted.....that picking Sterling was the sole reason,as football is a bit more complicated than that. However there is no avoiding the fact that he tried fixing something that wasn't broke and he played into Chelsea's far less talented hands.

Yep,great seeing Sterling playing to his strengths and playing his best football. He's not without fault still, but he is close to the lad i marvelled at back in 2018/19.

I think Sterling playing in the final was more securing his future than what he could contribute to the game.

If Sterling had been benched for that game, he would have been off this summer.

I don't think either Pep or Raheem are that daft,or short sighted.

I'm fairly sure he'll want to know how the future lies though.

Wow.

You must really love Luke Shaw then considering you, and you alone, voted for Shaw in the player of the tournament thread. As good as he has been that is one hell of a take by a City fan on a City thread let alone considering the universal acclaim for Sterling elsewhere in the media, other fan forums, betting odds etc etc.

That's why it is very hard to take many of your opinions seriously.

Pep wasn't short sighted though which is my point. Pep knows what Sterling contributes to the team over a season and was thinking long term. If that had been Pep's last game i don't think he would have played.

If Sterling hadn't have played in the biggest game of his career, with two years left on his contract he would have been looking elsewhere and City would have cashed in for fear of losing him on a free.

6 years in and 2 more years left on his contract.

A 3 year extension would take him to 11 years and the high probability he'd get to at least the magical 10 years with us and join the other long-term greats.

Likely also he'll join the 100+ England caps crew. How fantastic would that be? And a statue. I love it.

What a player, what a man, what a story. And all without technique, ball control, mentality, powder puff shot etc etc.

Funny old game eh Gundog? :)
England caps are great for him but irrelevant to me as a blue. Resale value aside, his form for us doesn’t warrant any extension to his contract.

For the total football we play and the elite performers we need he falls some way short in 3 of the areas you highlight - technically he’s just not good enough. His mentality however is 100% spot on.

I’m not saying he’s shite or that he couldn’t play a part for us if he stays, I just think Grealish is better suited to the way we play and is technically streets ahead of him.

and way way way behind in goal scoring

Sterling would have been short sighted though,as he'll never get it better than he has here, and Pep would have been from the angle that he needed to make a decision, for the wrong reason.....that would have consequences on the most important game i can remember.

Also,i definitely dont think 'cashing in' would be an easy option, the player holds all the cards.

Nobody who’d watched our games last season would compare Sterling’s level of play to any of those you mention save for Jesus. Stats are trotted out by people who don’t see the full picture.

Gundog, Stones, Walker were POTY contenders, Bernie Zinch and Rodri were remarkably consistent, Mahrez and Cancelo had purple patches.

You've clearly completely misunderstood my point. All the players I mentioned were ones who have contributed, overall, significantly less to this club than Raheem and all of them have had equal or worse patches of bad form.

Bit of headache for Txiki, as Sterling had a mediocre season and many could have said he does not deserve the salary he is holding out for on contract renewals, after this Euros he is having it will be hard to negotiate his salary down.

If a top striker joins that is also a huge salary, Kane would require something close to KDB salary. (which is imo at least about 150K more per week than what we save on Aguero-s salary.)

Wonder how all this will play out. Do not think we will cash on Sterling this summer despite his City season, but only Real or PSG will be afford him later on if we tie him down on a new improved contract but even they would not pay huge fee and huge salary both.

To me we looked a bit hesitant if we would accept a good offer from a buyer this summer but also do not want to look like we are not ready to renew with him. All the previous info like Stering refuses to be interested in a swap deal for anyone...

If he played like this for City like in the Euros, no question, but that is not guaranteed and Pep certainly asks different things from him than Southgate, also looks much more confident here than at City in last 12 months.
