Mad innit, in the last 12 months we've pretty much had campaigns for Sterling, Rodri, Gundo, Cancelo, Stones, Mendy, Jesus and Mahrez all to be fired out the door.

Not all clowns reside in the circus.

Just dipped into the Ferran Torres thread. Wow. So we're selling him too as he's not good enough.

The excuses are running out as fast as his credit in the bank has.

Needs rest, play him on right, play him on left, can't play with so and so behind him, excuse after excuse.

He's had rest, quite a bit recently, and also played various positions, and to achieve what ? Nothing on recent showings, absolutely zilch.
Seems we all have differing levels of the amount of credit he has stored. Being on of our most valuable, prolific and decorated players in our history doesn't count much for some eh?

I don't disagree that he's been shit. I don't disagree that he's had "rest".

But it's not the same thing. Riding the pine pony isn't the same as having a summer off to recharge the batteries, go on holiday. When you're at work and get to Friday and have a weekend off but are back to the grind on Monday its not the same as when you go and have a fortnight in Greece is it?

The lad needs to get out of the firing line, get mentally refreshed and most importantly the abuse from the "fans" needs to fucking stop. He's one of our own, he's one of our most successful players ever. You all need to give it a fucking rest, we get it.

I've never been a Sterling hater and in fact defended him on this forum in the past.

But I think of his 18 months of wretched form and the points raised by Prestwich Blue and the conclusion is inescapable to me - sell him this summer IF someone is willing to buy.

Also, we have done fairly well thus far at avoiding an "Ozil situation." Where the top earner on the club is a useless lump stealing wages from the bench amidst constant media drama.

Could I envision Sterling being said "useless lump" a year or so from now? Sadly, yes.

Another point - IF he is sold does that make it more or less likely we can add Haaland, etc? Clear answer there for my part.

Business end of the season pal,at big clubs fighting on all fronts, players need to step up,and maintain consistency, fucking holidays come when season ends.

So being as you are direct in conversation with me about giving it a rest,it's a discussion on a forum.

You "get" fuck all,as heads are buried in the sand,as he's one of the most decorated player we ever had ? Bollocks, that's shite.

Joe Hart is more decorated, let that sink in.

Sterling isn't asking for a new contract, the club are trying to get him to sign one. Sterling isn't asking for a pay rise, the club are trying to give him one whilst tying him down to a longer contract.
That's a an entirely different slant to one that suggests both sides want this and are talking about it. That screams to me he doesn't want to be here. And he's using the same tactic he used at Liverpool to force his move to us. You might well have been right 6 months ago but things have changed and he's clearly not in favour with Pep currently. So while I believe you that we wanted him to sign, I don't think your information is current. Nor do I believe he wants to sign.

The economics of football, for all clubs including us these days, is that there's a finite pot of money for fees and wages and we have to decide how best to spend it. And if we want to spend more than we've got money to fund it, we have to sell, or let an out-of-contract player go, to make up the difference.wE are incredibly loyal to players, probably too loyal as we perhaps keep them beyond their effective sell-by dates. But we also ditch players, like Sane and Sancho, who make it clear by their words or attitudes that they don't want to be here.

He needs a break desperately mate. Physically and mentally. It's not an excuse - it's simple sports science. Hitting a wall, running on empty or whatever - his drop-off from not the highest of bars has been extraordinarily.

The same thing has happened to Mane at Liverpool. Best or nearly best player and his performance has fallen off a cliff.

Yesterday was Sterling's 60th appearance (inc England) since last summer. He has more minutes in his legs than any other player (x Dias) and all without a proper break or a pre-season. This all on the back of the most minutes under Pep for the seasons before.

Mate,I really hope that a rest will help,I honestly do,but euros and that ,if England do well will delay the rest period even more,I’m concerned, but he will come back sooner or later I’m sure, but at this present moment saying I’m disappointed is an understatement
