I can see how it suits him financially to run his contract down.
But it's a world cup year. City aren't going to let a 27 year old top player leave for nothing.
It's sign a contract extension or you're not playing.

I think that's the way things will go. The new FFP rules will hurt clubs who let players run their contracts down and reward those who sell players 3 years into a 5 year contract.

If you have a player on very high wages why would he leave unless he runs his contract down. The buying club would have to increase his salary on top of a transfer fee.
They wait and the player runs his contract down.
