Police chase down joy riders all the time in high speed pursuits, frequently through built up areas.

I would say (and I would hesitate before sending most offenders to prison) that the current maximum sentence for dangerous driving (two years) is too low, especially for recidivists.

Oh mate I'm on your side here, lost too many people to drunk drivers. There has to be a set of standards for deciding on a chase and arrest though.

Of course there does, but the suggestion that police forces wouldn’t ordinarily chase a fleeing offender is utterly false.
