A big "well done" to the Met

That simply isn’t true. Permission from who?

The officer in the patrol car has to radio and ask for permission from the control room supervisor. The supervisor will ask for speeds, weather conditions, traffic conditions even the age of the driver before he will agree to allow the pursuit or not. In the same way the supervisor will halt the pursuit if he deems it unsafe. I do wish BM posters would not make such sweeping statements as 'thats simply not true without knowing any facts of how the police operate. One of the reasons this has been made into a major news story by the Met is that is is a complete about turn and why an Inspector stated that criminals had been removing their crash helmets whilst being chased knowing that the police would stop chasing them. The inspector stated that was no longer the case.

As it says moped thieves, so fuck em run them off the road.
Was only saying yesterday with relation to them coppers getting attacked by the public and these scrotes running amok in harpurhey need to go back to on the beat plod in pairs, one to tell you to behave and the other to threaten to smash your teeth in with his truncheon if you didn't.
Not that they would do it obviously(smash some heads) but some people need the fear of god put in them for fucking about like when I was a kid, you behaved when the police were about, now they get bricked

Of course there does, but the suggestion that police forces wouldn’t ordinarily chase a fleeing offender is utterly false.

No its not, see my other reply. But I will add to it, Greater Manchester Police;the beat bobby in his 'panda car' is not normally allowed to chase criminals in cars. Traffic officers are if they obtain permission from the control room supervisor. I believe that is the case in most forces but I will accept if someone tells me otherwise.

Gordon you say 'chase criminals'. Is a disqualified driver a criminal ? Often if the car is not reported stolen and is being driven erratically in a built up area by a person believed to be the owner and disqualified from driving, other than traffic cars, no one will chase him.

If I had my way...…

It has to be dependent on what they’ve done surely, if the helmetless rider has nicked a packet of biscuits then knocking them off their bike(risking their head hitting the road and killing them) seems over zealous. But yeah, it’s great to create a deterrent, the police will knock you off your bike!

If it was your standard biccies such as custard creams or Jaffa cakes I’d agree. If it was those fit chocolate cookies from Aldi I’d say it’s fair game tbh.

No, we're not.

So how does PC Plod know that the man who is driving fast in his car has a nuclear bomb in the boot, oh wait, the terrorist dials 999.

As you say you are being serious i would say that they wouldnt chase him, they would stick a cop with a gun at the end of the road and they would shoot him.

I do think it would be harsh if someone suffered broken bones and concussion over something really petty, a lot of criminals are too stupid for their own good to way up whether it's worth fleeing properly but they are fleeing the police after all is said and done.

Do our police have them tannoy loudspeakers to warn people in their cars? "Oi, stop or you're going for a tumble!"

Excellent irony there Mr Metal.
