In 1970 Sir Alf took off Robert Charlton 106 caps a record at the time and replaced him with Colin Bell, in a World Cup quarter final.

After the M***** crash Robert Charlton was also left out of the final squad for the 58 World Cup.

Colin Bell failed in 1970 due to a lack of experience, in fairness it took 12 years for England to recover from that substitution.

Colin Bell never made the position his own until he scored 2 goals under Don Revie against Checzoslavakia in the qualifiers for the 76 Euro championships.

It is fair to say additionally we won jack shit in the intervening 6 years, Colin Bell was tarred for a number of years by that experience.

Micah is at the same stage of his career and should be able to look at more senior members of the team to ride and guide him through this blip. Our captain for starters.

Micah will become one of the best players in the world at either Def mid-field or Centre half, he will be as good, if not better than Paul Mcgrath, but he needs a bit of encouragement, which clearly he is not getting on the terraces, or on this forum.

positionally awful.......unaware of danger......which are both crucial in a centre half.....no point in having so much pace if you,re 20 yards out of position.......

I beg to differ, Micah Richards positioning as a centre half is woeful, he has cost us at least 9 points this year, Cappello knows a (central) defender when he see's one, and he aint it!
He got his caps at full back, surely that should tell the present incumbant of the managers job at City, that that his is best position?

Sorry to say, with him being there for a long time, but if a silly offer comes in from someone (Arsenal, maybe) then we should let him go.

...and to be fair I'd like to examine all the evidence re Charlton and Bell, methinks the press had already decided the verdict before the trial.

Sure let someone else reap the benefits of Richards, Onouha, Ireland, Johnson, Evans and Sturridge. Not to mention letting SWP and Barton.

The best crop of academy footballers this country has produced since United brought through their crop in the mid nineties.

If Barton had gone to MU rather than us, he would have not turned out the same. He would have been moulded in to a great footballer, SWP more speed and ability than Beckham, Barton better than Butt. Richards is better than the Chuckles, Ireland and Johnson have as much ability as Scholes.

What they do and did not have was firm guidance. Argue if you wish.

When Charlton came off the score was already pegged back to 2-1 by Franz Beckenbauer & after the goal a fucked Charlton was taken off.
It's a myth that the game changed with that substitution,Terry Cooper was struggling after the german Jürgen Grabowski was brought on after half-time & Bonetti gifted Beckenbauer the 1st goal.

Total complete utter garbage,Bell set up Hurst for an open goal that he missed & Hurst had a good goal ruled out for fuck all.ffs.

what he said - good post mate

Bobby Charlton?? I wish all and sundry would stop gushing over this overrated twat. Its all you ever hear when talk of 60s football comes up; usually every other day in the press. Colin Bell was miles better than this prick ever could hope to be.

Bell and Richards in the same sentence? Come back in 5 years if and when he improves enough to be even considered in the same league. Richards is a good prospect at the moment who is having a poor season.

No way should that defeat be lumped at Bell's door, Charlton was subbed because Ramsey thought he was tiring in the heat and wanted to save him for the semi-final seeing as England were 2 up. Bell wasn't in goal and Bonetti - good keeper though he was - looked very jittery and was certainly at fault with the 2nd German goal.

The chance that Bell set up, mentioned earlier, is in this batch of highlights.
