Just found some old photographs from a couple of years back of a "cruise" along the 35 mile long Manchester ship canal, which was completed in 1894 and runs from Salford Quays into the heart of Liverpool. The trip itself costs around £35 pp and is excellent if you fancy a different family day out. The price includes return coach travel back to Salford.

Hope you find them interesting...most photos are looking back towards Manchester...

The picture of Runcorn Bridge reminds me of an allegedly true story from approximately 1990 when Cheshire Police announced a "Crime Free" weekend.

A local journalist asked how this was to be achieved and the Superintendent on duty replied that they were going to shut down The Bridge to stop the scousers getting into Cheshire.

Cool pics. Would love to do that. Is the bar open?

Yes, they even have one of them too.....:)

Ideally need a decent day for it, as it can be a bit breezy.

I also think they run it the other way round too.....

-- Mon Dec 02, 2013 9:56 pm --

lol!

Funnily enough I had a walk along the canal last week - in warrington - and there is still a guy who will row you across the canal at thelwall in a little boat. Costs 11p per person!
There's a pub nearby called the penny ferry and I never knew the significance.
Apparently when the canal was built it was part of the agreement that provision had to be made for people to get across the canal and it's still in force today.
Hardly any people still use it and the ferry man seemed quite surprised when I came along.
Cracking little oddity though.

Its well worth it.i did it a few years back from Liverpool to the quays.hot day and the bar was open.then went to sees new order and the bunnymen at ot cricket.would do it again as you see fantastic engineering feats.

Used to be a ferry from Partington to Irlam, seem to remember the guy was overcome by fumes from chemicals floating on the surface, and died. In fact it was five people who died when 1400 tons of petrol from a ship loading at Shell chemicals ignited, amazingly some survived

Nasty. This isn't really a ferry though - just a tiny rowing boat

Now that really is something to put on the 'to do' list. Thanks for posting.

Remembered doing it on a school trip in the 1960's, so was pleased to see it is still running:-

Brilliant! Roll on April!

Ah, so that's what spawned all the irrational jealousy, bitterness, and wallowing in Self Pity City all those years ago. When Manchester built a feat of engineering and navigated down it to kill the golden goose. Cool.

Something I badly wanted to do but could never get anyone to go with.

I also recall the Centenary Supporters Association about 10 years ago wanting to hire a ferry for a Liverpool or Everton game and got knocked back by the Merseyside police not wanted 200 pissed up blues arriving at Pier Head and then having to make their way to the ground...

It actually cost more to get a ships cargo full of cotton from Liverpool to Manchester than it did to get from the US to Liverpool....hence the canal and thousands of pissed off greedy scousers.
