A younger version of Steven Gerrard

Gerrard is a great player, but he is not what we need. Players like Gerrard need teams built around them. They are emotionally inspirational, have a fighting spirit and often look like they will die for the Badge. Often to lots of applause. But in addition, you get a player who is tactically undisciplined and often a hinderance to his team's chances in other areas, while raising his profile as the team's savior.

Hmmm! where have I seen that before: Stand up Mr. Tevez, I think you are being called out!

THIS!!

How come everyone is ignoring this post!! Is the most sensible thing Ive read on this thread.. however Milner is the answer to the OP!

Might get slaughtered for this but we have the player in the squad already....James Milner, if he can get a run of 5-10 games in the middle of the park i reckon he could potentially be that player. Hopefully with the addition of one wide player or two we wont have to see him stuck out on the wing where he has been average for 10 years.

^^^^^^^^^^ THIS ^^^^^^^^^^

Milner is more than capable of being our box to box
midfielder, he has the energy, desire, composure and
vision, all he requires is games.

His work rate is obviously great but I just don't think Milner has got the tecnical ability to ever be "like gerrard"....Can't see Milner banging in 35-40 yard screamers like Gerrard

In fairness to most of the responders, the call of the thread was to suggest Gerrard like options, while my response was to question the validity of that call. Thus, if I am being ignored, it is perhaps coz I am not abiding by the intent of the OP. Which was to name folks like Milner, Henderson, Yaya and the like in subtle homage to Gerrard.

To that effect, my post was clearly doing a poor job, wouldn't you agree :)

This ,you cant take on the likes of Barcelona with Milner your main man in the middle.

I think a run is what he needs to see if he can start to fullfil his potential. I seem to remember a few goals when he was at villa, in particular a 30 year screamer against Sunderland at the stadium of light, other long range efforts against Portsmouth and West ham first game of the season. maybe the frequncy of these types of strike is less than Gerrard, then again he is played out of position on the wing most of the time. To be fair Gerrard very much like Milner was used in various positions at Liverpool before he got a run in the middle. I seem to remember him playing at RB in some games. I think what Milner may lack in certain departsments from Gerrard he makes up in the fact he can shoot with both feet. but we will never know until he gets that run of games. Milner lets not forget was young player of the year when we signed him playing central midfield, what do we do put him back out on the wing, i hope these days next year are few and far between, then we should see the best of Jimmy Milner!

Rubbish - all he needs is; pace, a first touch, heading ability and the vision you mistakenly credit him with.................................needs to reinvent himself as a left back or take Barry's place.

You are absolutely spot on.

If we can get Mata/Sanchez, Milner would get more chances in the middle instead of having him cover the wings.
