Academy plan to develop our own Raheem Sterlings

Am I being a little premature in not finding the link between developing PL players and needing to compete at the highest level.
I see other clubs giving Raheem the chance to develop and making him a 20 year old worth the money we paid LFC.
I question whether he would have had that chance if he had been an Academy player at City.

Perhaps we will have that link shortly via say the Jason D. route (ie let others test his development) but will we have the bottle to put precocious teenagers into our first team to make them worth real money sooner rather than later ?

No, we don't plan on doing that.

Good grief!

Yeah, in England you pretty much have to put players out on loan to give them experience. In Spain, they get that experience playing older players because of the B team system. The advantage of that system is that you end up with young players coming through that already know each other's games well, as well as being trained to play exactly as they will have to in the senior team. The advantage of using loans is that players can get European or Premier League experience.

It looks like this season, we might be getting rid of one or two senior squad players though and not replacing them. That can only be a good thing for the academy.

Incidentally, we've already got one first teamer that we developed into a top player after a successful loan spell: Joe Hart. A bit earlier in our development, admittedly, and got some chances under Sven, but I think he proved if you're good enough, you'll get a chance. And it's much harder for a keeper to achieve that.

So whats the plan ?

If we get a youngster with potential do we blood him or send him out on loan irrespective of his talent ?
In the meantime we buy our stars from clubs that cannot do anything other than test their ability because of money constraints ?

perhaps if you frequented this forum on the odd occasion you may read snippets about our future stars

I have never doubted that we may already have future stars in our Academy.
I have never doubted that our Academy was built with exactly that in mind.

What I am asking is how we progress our future stars from Academy to PL squad. What route will these youngsters take ? Will we rely completely on sending them out on loan Jason D. style or will we give them PL exposure sooner rather than later Raheem style ?

The fact that a 20 year old can be worth buying based on other clubs having the courage to integrate them within their PL teams cannot have escaped recognition.
I realise that our PL team is always full of Pl proven players so places are scarce and our manager may be averse to experimenting whilst keeping all happy.
I also realise that probably Raheem was given his chance because his former clubs did not have a squad like ours so selecting him was an easy option for them/
The fact remains that he rose to the challenge and learnt quickly. Surely he is not unique is he ?

Please direct me to the area of information that answers my questions if you feel I am lacking time on this extremely good forum.

If you read back through your own post I'm pretty sure you've answered your questions really.

times have changed i saw gary owen and peter barnes come through from the reserves most teams did that then with there most promising kids. now most team sent out promising players on loan to lesser teams to gauge if they are good enough for the next step up. well all the successful teams do anyway.

these academy player now have to vie for a spot with some of the best players in the world not the british isles as in times gone bye.

I wasn't doubting your genuine question and I may have been hasty in my reply, as it was a busy day, to highlight that I was pointing you to the Academy forum where this often discussed rather than the main Bluemoon forum.

There's lots of discussion in here about our stars, who will or won't make it, how they should be developed etc etc

in fact @twosips regularly posts blogs about the players and how they could be developed, an interesting starting point

Thanks Colin for your reply. I will examine my posts closely and probably agree with you.

I suppose I have at least given an answer somewhere to my questions, mainly because I listed the options as I saw them without being able to decide which route our decision makers would take.

I would hope that we may be able to short circuit the loan spell if another exceptional young talent is produced. Testing their PL capability at that younger age is the real issue so I guess we will have to keep sifting and loaning until a special talent appears.

Cheers man.

Yeah, I don't mean to blow my own trumpet but i've gone into pretty thorough detail about loads of our academy prospects at my blog.

The last three posts in particular are useful, but I tend to try and look at how the club will develop each player when talking about them (see the loan reviews)

Many thanks for putting my query in the proper place on the forum SF and thanks Steven for providing the interesting link to your blog(s).

The blog as you say is player specific but am I correct in thinking that none of the players you detail are capable of PL inclusion without the experience of development as a loan player ?

If so, how would we as a club deal with a similar precocious talent that forced us to pay Raheems record fee at the age of 20 ? Perhaps this is unlikely and planning for it at this stage is pointless ?
Would we ignore any star quality and insist that despite his obvious capability he finish his apprenticeship the City way or can we fast track such a player if and when we find him ?

Wel'll see it with Iheanacho's case this season.

It all means nothing until one of them is starting for the first team. Only time will tell.
