We don't seem to have a dedicated Aussie Rules - AFL thread. So having just watched a thrilling Prelim Final between Geelong and Brisbane Lions I thought I would start one for those of us who do enjoy it - or for those who are trying to figure out just what is happening!

I started watching a few years ago when I realised it was available on BT. So now it is on Discovery. It does take a while to figure out some of the rules, but once you do what you have is an amazing sport where the athleticism is immense. It can switch and change very quickly as sitting on a lead is very tricky and so you get situations today where Brisbane made a great comeback in the second half, looked like they had opened up enough of a lead to win it, then were pulled back and with 2 minutes to go Geelong thought they had scored the winning goal only for Brisbane to go and score two more and take themselyes into next weeks Grand Final.

My cousins are in Perth and support West Coast Eagles - so this is the team I have adopted. But as they are in the doldrums at the moment after a few good years that included a Grand Final win - it is also just good to watch it and enjoy good exciting, often thrilling sport.

Grand Final: Brisbane Lions v Sydney Swans.

losers of the last two finals get another chance to win it - only second time (I think) that no Victorian based side has been in the final. I've really enjoyed Brisbane's run to the final and their aggressive running style - so seem to be rooting for them.

If the match continues in the style of this first quarter it's going to be a cracker. Although I'm struggling with Maroon v Red!

For the life of me I can't understand that daft game LoL
I went to the MCG a couple of years ago watched Essendon, complete puzzle for me.

The Brisbane Lions won by a mile 120 - 60, thoroughly deserved, 1st Grand Final win for the lions since 2003.

When the game is played well, and you have a view high in the stand (or on TV), it can be a majestic, beautiful spectacle, sometimes though it's a hell of a lot of effort from the players (like muscular marathon runners a lot of them) and it can be a grind.

An Aussie explained it to me years ago as "seagulls fighting over hot chips"

Do they still have the thuggery ?
It's a physical sport and there can be some rough stuff - but mostly they are careful with it and there are severe penalties for anyone stepping over the mark. Like rugby they don't allow tackles in the air or round the neck - so seems to have been a lot of effort to make it safer for everyone.

That second quarter they were relentless and Swns had no answer. It's a game that can really get away from you very quickly - and it did today.

I think it's the athleticism that leaves me amazed - I've not seen stats for how far they run - but covering a cricket pitch at the speed they do is amazing. The heights they jump to take a mark (or stop it) the skilled way they kick or create space with clever movement - there is a lot going on and to be fair it's much more than "seagulls fighting over hot chips" even if I smiled at the description.

I agree with all you say, the seagulls quote always made me smile

I got quite into it when Channel 4 showed it regularly back in the 80s.

Forgot it existed until a few weeks ago when I stumbled across a game on TNT.

It was a bit like watching a re-run of a 1970s sitcom, that you thought was hilarious at the time. Was like.. How the fuck did I ever think this shit was any good?
