Alan Ball: Did Franny Lee Really Think He Would Bring Trophies?

When Ball was "relieved of his duties" Asa Hartford became caretaker manager, though he didn't want the full time job, until Steve Coppel was appointed permanent manager (for all of a month!). Phil Neal then became caretaker manager to continue the managerial musical chairs until Frank Clark was appointed and kept the job for over a year! What still amazes me is that this list of managers may not be full of A-listers but they had been good professionals and one or two had very solid records as managers - so why did they become incompetent, irrational wrecks once they set foot in Maine Road?!
Pressure bud how many other clubs of your size back then have had managers with decent records only to fail ?????

Add to that that the rags where winning everything at the time so it cannot have been a good place to be in ..............its like it been a massive flip the City club back then mirrors the United club now and vice versa

Yes I remember those days vividly, I was growing up in a heavily Man Utd supporting place, and they never ceased to rub their gratuitous success in my face as we struggled comedically. But it didn't matter to me. To me, those days will always be defiantly supporting your team no matter what, daydreaming of breaking a trophy drought, and the wailing drones of Oasis on the CD player, tuning into the soul of fellow struggling City fans.
Wow, you really hit it poetically there and brought me back to how it felt. Don’t forget Pet Shop Boys “Go West”, every time I heard that I thought of Uwe Rosler’s opening goal at Old Trafford, for some reason…:)

My memory might be failing me but I seem to remember that chant first bursting into the collective consciouness at Hillsborough on the last day of the 1993/94 season. It was a gloriously sunny day in Sheffield and Rosler scored our goal in a 1-1 draw.

We played in the stunning (well worth a revisit if you're listening Puma) purple and white away kit with yellow sponsors. I recall the scoreboard announcing that Sheffield United had been relegated to much delight from the home fans at the end of the game.

Don’t ask me how but I somehow found myself in the boardroom seats at Stoke away, a miserable defeat. Ball had been their manager and they despised him. So they rejoiced at his imminent downfall
That was the game when Franny decided to sack him, 3/4 games into the new season maybe?
Went for a piss in the posh bogs and when I came out, Franny was in the corridor offering Stoke’s manager Lou Macari the City job
At least the chippy merchant had the decency to decline, given his obvious history with the odd lot
Love Franny as a player but Ball and Macari?
Daft **** not only couldn’t pick a decent manager, but almost seems like he was trolling City fans

After Ball, Lee got desperate. He offered the job to all and sundry in his time as Chairman. Great player Francis but a terrible Chairman.

Shortly after signing Kavelashvili, Ball said in an interview (I think it might be on the 95/96 season review video) “Gio keeps saying ‘he is better than me!’”

Presumably scouting was not on Kinkladze’s radar as a follow-on career after retirement…
City bought Kinkladze, Kavelashvilli, Tshkadadze, and Shelia....all Georgians, basically bought to keep Kinkladze company and lessen the chances of him leaving.

Interestingly, Kavelashvilli is the President of Georgia now.

3 wins from 19 matches from 9th December to 8th April - that's Europe qualifying form?
It isn't if you shave off the wins either side, in theory if you used the last 27 games it would have been a 49 point season so mid-way.

Remember a good number of Blades returning that night from an away game, I think at Chelsea while waiting for last train out of Sheffield. Had some good days out at both Sheffield clubs over the years and yes Rosler chant was constant that day. He quickly became a cult hero that spring.

The two defenders improved the side but had serious injuries which couldn't be foreseen.
They were decent players, but the fact they were Georgian was solely to keep Kinkladze happy. Maybe if the net had been cast wider for defenders, more reliable, less injury-prone players would have slotted in instead.

Tshkadadze started 98/9 season with a couple of goals before getting a long term injury like Shelia.
Other than a debut derby goal Kavelashvilli didnt do much for us.
Remember us being linked with another Georgian, Arveladze.
