If he was just a commentator, and the BBC laid down the law about professionalism, he would be one of the greatest ever. He has a rare gift for communicating the action and atmosphere.
But there is a huge blight on the reporting of the game. The commentators are now treated like experts. For the best part of forty years, no-one knew what John Motson thought about the issues. He wasn't asked, because he isn't an expert. It's not his job, he's there to describe the action and add colour to proceedings. Nowadays they sit him down in a room and grill him on every last issue. Like we care. Same thing with Green. Same thing with journalists, who have been elevated to the status of analysts and experts on things they have absolutely zero experience of, tactics, sports science and so on.
