Alan Green

If he was just a commentator, and the BBC laid down the law about professionalism, he would be one of the greatest ever. He has a rare gift for communicating the action and atmosphere.

But there is a huge blight on the reporting of the game. The commentators are now treated like experts. For the best part of forty years, no-one knew what John Motson thought about the issues. He wasn't asked, because he isn't an expert. It's not his job, he's there to describe the action and add colour to proceedings. Nowadays they sit him down in a room and grill him on every last issue. Like we care. Same thing with Green. Same thing with journalists, who have been elevated to the status of analysts and experts on things they have absolutely zero experience of, tactics, sports science and so on.

But in fairness it is his job, its what he does all day. I have followed city and football in general for about 40 years (and played at a rubbish level for most of that time) but realise that I know relatively little about tactics etc. when I hear those who live the game day in day out offering their analysis. Some of the nonesense I read on here makes me sound like Joe Mercer but everything is relative.

Yes but green isn't one of them. The way he slags some clubs off is disgraceful, he's toned it down a bit since liverpool became ordinary, but he thinks all football should be played like Barca, that's not possible nor realistic, the bloke is a clown when he spouts his analysis, if he stuck to commentating he'd be good, but he doesn't.

There is no doubt that he seeks to generate debate - but again, thats his job. He does hold my attention though which is more than I can say for Nigel Glehorn!

His job should just be commentator, but he's like a WUM on here, he does it to be controversial, he shouldn't create debate imho, just commentate, leave the expert analysis for the experts who have played and managed in the game (even if they must include david pleat).
