Manchester City are keeping tabs on AC Milan starlet Alexander Merkel.

The Kazakhstan-born defender, who came through the ranks at Stuttgart, moved to Milan in 2008 and has been sent on loan to Genoa this season.

And following some impressive performances during his 12 Serie A appearances so far, Merkel is expected to have a bright future.

Now, according to Italian newspaper Tuttosport, City have sent scouts to follow his progress - and they have been impressed by his displays.

It is understood that Genoa will have the option to buy Merkel in the summer but the youngster might be tempted by a shot at the Premier League, should City firm up their interest with a bid

I didn't think it was a loan but some weird co-ownership thing Milan and Genoa have go going on with him and El Shaarawy. Transfer negotiations with one Italian club is difficult enough let alone having to put up with two clubs for one player.
