Hoyle met Johnson to "Lay down the law" about his behaviour in parliament a couple of weeks ago. Johnson hasn't listened and Hoyle hasn't rebuked him in public, yet in that time has done so to a backbench Labour MP and the SNP leader for calling Boris a liar to his face in the chamber.

Mr Speaker, if any of these ministers of the crown were found guilty of perjury in a court, could I then call them liars?

He pointed out that announcements of changes should be in the Commons before the media. It was reported that that had been agreed, and I don't recall any statements since.

Not sure what else he has to rebuke Johnson over - it isn't in the Speaker's power to define how an answer meets the question.

Calling someone a liar is however against the rules, so he can't ignore it.

The sky doesn't fall in if he ignores it.

Actually, every time he stops proceedings to warn a member against calling Liar Johnson a liar, he draws attention to the accusation.

Every opposition MP should be saying it, queueing up to say it.

I assumed that's why they do it in the first place! Johnson hates being called out and he starts to lose control.

I think if he let it go, it would proliferate into every exchange - erasing defined acceptable limits is rarely a good idea.
